Imagine he was a Christian leader
Harvard audience silent as Khatami defends killing gay people in Iran.
I imagine a hearty "boooo" would be insensitive and show a lack of multiculturalism.

An old-school liberal satirist (when "liberal" had some bite to it), Tom Lehrer, once wrote a song about Harvard's so-called fighting spirit. It's called "Fight Fiercely, Harvard"
He explains, "[O]ne did come to realize that the football fight songs that one hears in comparable [other than Harvard] stadia have a tendency to be somewhat uncouth, and even violent, and that it would be refreshing, to say the least, to find one that was a bit more genteel."
Lyrics here.
Posted by: Jeremayakovka at September 13, 2006 05:16 PMDon't be too hard on the Harvard crowd.
I mean, there might have been jihadis in the audience or the entourage taking pictures, and, well, there's the whole Daniel Pearl thing, and, well, you never know. You wouldn't want your picture showing up in the scrapbook of any Egyptian exchange students, if you know what I mean.
I mean, there's speaking truth to power, and there's being stupid, capisce?
