2. Admission of wrongdoing and asking for forgiveness are strengths. Which party obfuscates and obstructs and defies regarding these issues?
Jeremay, I think in terms of your second point, I would say both of the parties. It's why the Grand Old Protectors of the Grand Old Pedophile in the House leadership are now being called to task.
Posted by: Von Bek at October 5, 2006 02:14 PMWhich Grand Old Pedophile might that be? Mel Reynolds, whose sentence was commuted by outgoing President Clinton? Gerry Studds, who paid no political price at all? Oh wait, I forgot it's only pedophilia when a Republican does it.
Posted by: Xrlq at October 5, 2006 02:46 PMYou're preaching to the choir on Mel Reynolds and Gerry Studds. I'm still disgusted that Clinton pardoned Mel Reynolds. But here's the thing; I put principles ahead of party and while I vote Republican most of the time, I have no problem going off the reservation when it's called for-namely to vote for the Consitution Party. I'm pro gun, pro God, pro life who wants a smaller federal government and closed borders which makes me a hell of a lot more conservative than a pro abortion sodomite like Foley. I think the House leadership acted badly here. The GOP is supposed to be better than the Dems right?
Posted by: Von Bek at October 5, 2006 02:54 PMPass the champagne over here please...
Posted by: toby at October 5, 2006 02:55 PMAnd yet you continue to blindly support this party, regardless of the number of times that items like this surface.
Borderline brainwashed. Facts don't matter anymore...
Posted by: New York Hotlist at October 5, 2006 03:47 PMOk, I'll go slow for you: I'M A CONSERVATIVE. The Republican party best represents my interests. There is NO WAY that the Democrats can represent me better. NONE.
What part do you need me to explain again? And, seriously, I'd cut the brainwashed crap out right now. Previous idiots who made similar comments were made to feel very, very small.
Posted by: Karol at October 5, 2006 03:52 PMThe great thing about this article is "Republican" is the fifth word in the article, whereas if he were a Democrat the fact would be buried deep in the article or not mentioned at all.
The Republican representatives have a lot to answer for this election, but I don't see how this kind of thing should matter outside his district.
Posted by: Eric at October 5, 2006 03:52 PMEnlighten me here, please: I'm far of these matters.
Is thought/plan to act/expectation of sex constitute a deed of pedophilia itself? Or is it a thought crime?
Did the guy actually drop his pants and forced himself on poor kid(s)? How old the kid(s) was/were - 3, 6, 16 or 18? In 2 last cases - I don't consider them kids at all, but that might be just me.
Another thing: what all of you bl;aming the White House for inaction expected them to do? Until nobody files a complaint/criminal case, wiretapping/investigation/shadowing an individual is a violation of his civil rights. Or it is a violation only when a Democrat is concerned? Do we have 2 sets of Constitutions here?
All they could do, on the basis of rumors, was to invite Foley for a private talk - as far as I understood, they did, and they warned him.
At least he didn't deny his intentions and resigned immediately - and didn't engage in "blowjob is not a sex act" laughable defence mode - hell, he is not even acused of having blowjobs.
It's funny how lefties get all righteous when it doesn't concerns their candidates.
And yet you continue to blindly support this party, regardless of the number of times that items like this surface.
Borderline brainwashed. Facts don't matter anymore...
So can we assume you voted for Clinton? I thought infidelity was a "private matter" between husband and wife!
Posted by: Beth at October 5, 2006 08:20 PMTatyana, I could buy your arguments if Foley hadn't been one of the primary movers in the criminalizing large swaths of online speech. As is, the irony meter pegs.
Also, I don't think the question of whether what he did was or wasn't legal is really germaine; the question is, is he a hypocrite? The answer is pretty obvious, and I for one am hap-hap-happy to see Congressional hypocrites publicly humiliated, party affiliation be damned.
And why should Hastert go down with this ship? Because he's been an idiot throughout. (How stupid before the story broke is subject to argument; the stupidity afterward is self-evident.) Stupidity should hurt.
I'm sick of the argument that "yeah, they're bastards, but they're our bastards." I certainly see where Karol is coming from, but as a Libertarian Hawk, I don't feel like I have any bastards I can call my own. Therefore, I am totally imune to that argument at this point. So every time a Congress Critter can be roasted, once again regardless of party affiliation, I say break out the barbecue sauce and turn the heat up.
Considering the poll numbers on "Approve of Congress (Y/N)?", I get the impression I'm right in the middle of public opinion, on this one point anyway.
Yeah, a Democratic Congress scares me. But the current one disgusts me.
Posted by: Mark Poling at October 6, 2006 11:12 AMI share your disgust with the guy, Mark, but my argument is not "he's our bastard".
What I'm asking isn't the playing field should be level?
I wonder what the reaction in the Democratic camp would be if Foley made that 18 yo (yes, the guy he sent very mild e-mails to, it seems, to be of 18 years of age, hardly an innocent toddler) his lover. Then promoted him to anti-terror expert on his constituent's expense. Then let him make a bordello out of the apartment he paid for (by taxpayers' money). All of the above while being married to a woman and having a heterosexual facade. And then, being found out, to appear on TV with a tear in his eye - and promoting his autobiography (which sells pretty well, btw), thus deriving hefty income out of his shame.
I can't even imagine the scope of Zeusean lightnings and thunder that would originate from Democrats.
I belong to no official party, have no particular fondness to Republicans, but current unfairness in judgement disgusts me more than a hypocricy of a Congressman in apparent need for serious phsychotherapy.
