Uh-oh

Plane crashes into building on 72nd and York in Manhattan.

UPDATE: CBS is reporting it's not a helicopter, as believed earlier, and is in fact a small plane. I haven't heard news of any casualties but Jay in the comment section said that 2 are being reported dead. I'll keep updating this post as the story unfolds.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Dawn is telling me that CBS is reporting the plane belongs to Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: My brother just texted that ESPN is reporting Cory Lidle was the pilot and he is one of four people dead. Dawn is all over this.

ONE MORE UPDATE: Oh man, this is priceless (via Citizen Journal):

Actor Alec Baldwin tries to pass a police cordon near the site where a small aircraft crashed into a high-rise building in New York, October 11, 2006. (Chip East/Reuters)

At least Sean Penn had a life raft.

Quick! Place bets! Crazy or Terrorist?

Posted by: David at October 11, 2006 03:17 PM

hahahahahah...terrorist! And WTF, I thought our airspace was protected?? How does this happen again...IN MANHATTAN of all places?

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 03:22 PM

Not so funny. At least two people are reported dead and more trapped.

Posted by: jay at October 11, 2006 03:37 PM

The FAA can not rule out terrorism. The DHS has ordered divisions to patrol the water, the NORAD has ordered fighters scrambled over cities.

Posted by: AMERPUNDIT at October 11, 2006 03:39 PM

hahahahahah...terrorist!

Always showing class...

Quick! Everyone go to http://allinthenuances.blogspot.com

Posted by: Ren at October 11, 2006 04:17 PM

Spam?

Wow, that was unusual.

Anyway, the fire has supposedly been extinguished for the most part.

At least, according to some of the reports on WNYC.

The only two fatalities-so far-are the people found near the wheel chassis of the airplane.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 04:35 PM

Edit: They could have been residents of the condo, not necessarily passengers.

I'm glad they finally settled on a "fixed wing aircraft."

For now.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 04:37 PM

The plane registered to Corey Lidol?

This just gets more and more odd.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 04:47 PM

Four people (confirmed) dead now.

Two in the plane, and two inside of the condo.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 04:47 PM

They say Lidol was on the plane with an instructor.

Posted by: jay at October 11, 2006 04:56 PM

Ah, misspelled his name.

Yeah, it seems as if he was piloting the plane.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 05:03 PM

I vaguely remember another well known ballplayer crashing his plane a number of years ago.

Posted by: jay at October 11, 2006 05:27 PM

Munson. He crashed in Ohio.

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 05:33 PM

Was Lidol learning take-offs and nothing else?

Posted by: Jake at October 11, 2006 05:36 PM

No one inside of the apt. building was injured?

Wow.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 05:39 PM

You know there are a lot of athletes who seem to die in plane crashes: Clemente, Payne Stewart, Munson, Rocky Marciano. Damnable shame.

Posted by: Von Bek at October 11, 2006 05:48 PM

LMAO.

I'm sorry, I know this is a tragic event, but I can't help it.

Is there any situation-or any circumstances-where Alec "The Bloviator" Baldwin can restrain his congenital urge to act like an asshole?

*shakes head*

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 06:01 PM

Well, if you are rich and crash a car, chances are they will live (since the rich tend to drive limos or SUVs). Crash a plane, and well, even if you have a jumbo jet, like John Travolta, the plane still loses

Posted by: JeremyR at October 11, 2006 06:02 PM

Rocky marciano is dead?

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 06:02 PM

Ah, Dawn, his spirit lives on with all the crappy white heavyweight champs who frankly bore the hell out of me. I am really pulling for lifelong underachiever Shannon Briggs to take one of the belts in a few weeks just so I have some reason to watch the heavyweights again.

Posted by: Von Bek at October 11, 2006 06:05 PM

Then again, it's possible they were blocking his access to a Dunkin' Donuts across the street.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 06:09 PM

Is Vitali Klitschko any good?

I know he's white, and used to hold one of those belts.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 06:11 PM

That Baldwin photo is the best caption contest I've seen in ages. How did that cop stifle his laughter?

Posted by: Joe Grossberg at October 11, 2006 06:25 PM

Vitali was pretty good. He retired and now his brother Wladimir has one of the belts. Wlad is nowhere near as good as his brother; he simply does not have the chin.

Posted by: Von Bek at October 11, 2006 06:26 PM

I always liked Andrew Gulota.

Nothing says technique better than sucker punching another boxer in the scrotum.

If only Gerry Cooney had that kind of finesse.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 06:36 PM

That pic of the Bloviater is priceless.
COP: You can't cross.
BALDWIN: I MUST!
COP: Sorry, not gonna happen.
BALDWIN: Do you know who I am.
COP: Yeah. It's like a bonus. How's Kim doing?

Posted by: TC@LeatherPenguin at October 11, 2006 06:45 PM

If it was suicide, what a selfish, frickin' loser it was who did it.

Posted by: Jeremayakovka at October 11, 2006 06:50 PM

How very sad. I remember seeing a picture of a plane crashed into a NY skyscraper from WW2. Fog to blame that time.

Posted by: bryan at October 11, 2006 07:00 PM

btw, is "Crazy or Terrorist" not funny if it affects your city? I knew there was a reason I've been saying how crass a game this is!

Posted by: bryan at October 11, 2006 07:02 PM

no...still funny. hahahahhahaha

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 07:08 PM

Although, I guess this one's neither...

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 07:09 PM

unless it was suicide...then, it's crazy.

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 07:10 PM

It's not crass, c'mon. This was clearly either an accident or terrorism (unless Lidel took the Yankees loss much harder than expected) and therefore didn't fit the game rules.

Posted by: Karol at October 11, 2006 07:10 PM

I don't think people commit sucide simply because they have a crappy playoff series.

No one's that emo.

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 07:12 PM

baldwin was prolly anxious to get in front of a camera with the burning building behind him so he could make a statement blaming the whole thing on george bush and that it's all a zionist plot.

Posted by: Chris S at October 11, 2006 07:25 PM

Remember, though he was flying the plane, he had an instructor on board.

Posted by: jay at October 11, 2006 07:28 PM

Maybe it was the teacher who committed suicide.

Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 11, 2006 07:35 PM

The whole idea of student pilots kind of creeps me out.

Even when I see that "student driver" sticker attached to a bus I get a bit nervous.

I realize you have to learn somewhere, but do professional pitchers really need to know how to fly a Cessna around New York?

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 07:46 PM

I'm no fan of Alec Baldwin by any means, but what proof do we have he's trying to get by the cop and not just asking him about the situation? Where's the accompanying story from the photog? Where's a transcript?

What I want to see:
"Hi Alec, I was just wondering. I mean, I know that we don't even know each other, but I know that you were going out with that girl Kim. I can see that you're not going out with her anymore and I wondering if-- "

It must be a well kept secret, but not all small planes are Cessnas. Ironically (or maybe not) this particular plane had a large parachute as a safety device.

Posted by: YetAnotherRick at October 11, 2006 09:24 PM

I heard about that.

Was escaping from the aircraft even a possibility at that point?

Posted by: Gerard at October 11, 2006 09:34 PM

Hey - Just came across the wire that Howard Dean surrendered to George Steinbrenner five minutes ago.

Posted by: Sterling at October 11, 2006 10:52 PM

I can't believe that on this post I am forced to write this: Shannon Briggs isn't an underacheiver. He is a shitty boxer. Golota is a very good boxer but he has a heart as weak as young Klitscho's chin.

Posted by: Charles at October 12, 2006 01:41 AM

Precedent, of sorts:

At 9:49 a.m. on Saturday July 28, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell bomber flying in a thick fog accidentally crashed into the north side [of the Empire State Building between the 79th and 80th floors. 14 people killed, including the entire plane crew.

Posted by: Rich Rostrom at October 12, 2006 04:01 AM

Gerard

The parachute in this plane is (I believe) attached to the plane itself, to let it come down at a survivable rate.

Posted by: Rich Rostrom at October 12, 2006 04:03 AM

Hey, you got Deadspun.

Posted by: Charles at October 12, 2006 04:02 PM

When I first heard the news about the airplane-into-high-rise crash, like everyone I wondered if it could be an act of terrorism. I wondered if the day/date was significant in any way? It caused me concern when I realized that if October 11, 2006 is written as 10/11/6 and is then flipped vertically (upside down) and then horizontally, the date becomes 9/11/01. As we learned, the crash was a tragic accident and this trick of numbers was merely a fluke.
