Raaaaaaaacist. Oh, wait.
My father took this picture inside the Visa Room in Livingston, Zambia.

Although, looking at the per capita GDP of people in Zambia ($931) versus their neighbors Zimbabwe ($2607) and Botswana ($11,410), it's not immediately obvious why Zambia is even having an illegal immigration problem.

According to your link, there's about 12 million people in Zambia -- 1 million are hiv+ or have full blown aids. 100k died of aids in 2004. A half million orphaned children due to aids. Terrible terrible terrible.

Tell him to take a shower when he gets home in case he sampled any local delicacy's ;)

And Dan, GROSS.
Posted by: Karol at October 13, 2006 11:57 AMAfrican conflicts tend to spill over borders; Rwanda and D.R. Congo/Zaire are recent examples.
Given how unstable the situation is in Zimbabwe, they probably are thinking of them in particular.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at October 13, 2006 12:49 PMHaha, good point. Maybe they meant "report any suspected EMIGRANT" but there was a misprint?
Posted by: Yelena at October 13, 2006 12:49 PMI don't know about those per capita GDP numbers. Zimbabwe is suffering from food shortages, hyperinflation and Robert Mugabe (who would be popularly considered a racist if he weren't a melanin-enhanced socialist). I'd say those are all good reasons to flee to Zambia.
But otherwise, yes, an awesome trip.
Posted by: Nikhil Bhat at October 13, 2006 01:55 PMSouth Africa has a huge immigration problem, in spite of the ineptitude of the ANC-led government.
For a great-but far from dull-summary of some of the problems plaguing Southern Africa I suggest these:
Going To The Dogs
War Stories
Even if you don't particularly like memoirs you'll be fascinated by those books.

Imagine a poster like that in El paso....holy shit mayng.
Posted by: dan the x-Republican at October 13, 2006 03:52 PMSurely the Zambian government are using the idea of illegal immigrants as a smokescreen to divert attention from other problems. I wonder where they got the idea?
