I heart Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart is bringing its fantastic $4 generic prescription program to NY.

Of course, thanks to doofus hipsters who move to NY for a few years after college to live the faux-bohemian lifestyle before moving back to the 'burbs, we don't have any Wal-Marts in NY's five boroughs lest we disturb the asthetic of the South Bronx or the Gowanus in Brooklyn and actually give the poor people of these neighborhoods somewhere affordable to shop. Eye-roll.

I've loved Wal-Mart since my first time visiting one at 4am in Dallas, Texas and every time I've stayed outside NY for various campaigns (Pennsylvania, Georgia, Colorado) I've become a regular at the nearest Wal-Mart.

I want $4 generic drugs! I want a NY Wal-Mart!

No way, Karol. Because if Wal-Mart comes in, it's going to destroy the jobs of all those hundreds of thousands of retail people with full benefits and pension programs who are currently working at those mom and pop shops that not only offer affordable goods but also employ 17 poor people per register and pay them handsome wages of $21 an hour and give them FREE drugs. It might also hurt Target, which unlike Wal-Mart, pays its employees $73 an hour and doesn't even make them work (and also that red and white bulls-eye is, like, SO much cooler than the smiley face).

Don't you understand these simple economics?

If you have access to a car, the nearest Wal-Mart to you is only about 7 miles from the UES (or in relative terms, roughly half the distance to Ms. Summers' place) and may only charge 3-3.5% sales tax.

An interesting statistic:

WalMart gives poor people $221 billion a year through lower prices. In contrast, the food stamp program gives poor people $28 billion a year.

Karol, next time you're in Dallas maybe your DFW readers can meet for drinks? And/or a trip to Wal-Mart?

Dear lord.

Definitely PattyAnn! I loved Dallas.

Really Karol~~~~ You really need to come back to Dallas!!! We barely got to hang out last time you were here!

You should plan a trip for the winter so you can enjoy the beautiful weather!

I heart Wal-mart too.

But, uh, if you honestly think that doofus, post-college hipsters are to blame for the lack of Wal-Mart, you're probably mistaken. They may talk shit about Wal-Mart in their lofts, but they're not the ones organizing opposition.

Still, never miss up the chance to get a good jab in at a straw man. Not on Alarming News anyway

Oh come on, just because I didn't mention that unions (aka legal mobs) are just as much to blame? If you visit any of the anti-Walmart websites, it's all these pierced doofuses who you just KNOW smell of pachouli.

I live about five miles from Wal-Mart, in Middleburgh (upstate) and it's my main source for food shopping as well as perscriptions. The $4 drug thing is a good idea, except for the exceptions. Birth control is not included in this plan, which sucks for people like me who do shop at Wal-Mart all the time. I will still fill my birth control there, because it's the only place, but I just thought that you'd want to know who is not really benefitting from this great idea...

Man, I haven't done a late night Wal-Mart romp in ages.

So yeah, you and Jessica have to come back to Dallas.

Todays news is that WalMart has done more financially for the poor than all of the government programs combined. The government may have spent more money but it was siphoned of by the criminal administrators called Civil Service workers.

All politics aside (is that allowed on this site?) I really don't like Wal-mart. Of course, if they are going to give me my prescription for $4, I may change my mind. Wal-Mart is good for 4 AM drunken shopping trips, emergency necessities goods while out of town, and an occasional crappy Christmas gift. But as for regular shopping (at least at the ones here in Indiana and Kentucky), well let's just say that those are the places that give Kentuckiana its reputation for rednecks. They're dirty (the stores, not the clientele... well... never mind...), they're poorly laid out, and the employees are usually pissed off and mean. When you're drunk or desperate, that's ok. When you're trying to get your grocery shopping done on Sunday afternoon... not so much.

Here's to not being poor!

See how many Kosher delis dissappear after wal-mart sucks the custom out of them. ditto any other half decent provender of goods you like.
