Anyone awake yet?

I'm going out in about an hour to buy myself a digital camera. Any suggestions? Um, quick?

My only specifications is that it has to be small, and take good pictures even in less than quality light.

UPDATE: The Canon A530 looks pretty good and is pretty cheap.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Testing my new camera. Yes, I got the Canon E530. So far so good. The linked pictures were taken with no settings being changed from its packaged state.

No. My camera is a dinaosaur -- I bought it in 1999. What is your price range? Max. pixels x recyle time. That's the bitch. Waiting for it to power up so you can take another photo, especially with flash. They should have models with batteries. Try them out. I had people recommend Olympus though I can't remember the model number. Have you owned a digital camera before?

I have an incredible Canon elura but it's really for special occasions because it's so big and I wouldn't take it out for some drunken night out. Which, really, is the purpose of digital cameras, right? :-)

It looks good, Karol. I paid $600 bucks for mine and it has only 2 megapixs. It's amazing how fast they have advanced. The model you are looking at has an 1so 800 setting. That combined with flash and you can take all the drunken night on the town pixs you want. Again, the only thing is recycle time.

Rechargable batteries are now so cheap and fast, too. Oh, and make sure you use the redeye reductor.

You can't believe how many cameras I own and never use: Minolta slr, Nikon slr, 3 automatic slrs, 3 poloroids, 2 Holgas, 1 Seagull, and my old Kodak digital. I am the worse picture taker. And any time I try to take pictures in public, I get harassed because they think I'm a professional photograper. I should bring an album of my blurry, thumb in the view photos to dispel them of that delusion. lol!

Karol, that's my camera - and I love it. There are tons of staff I don't use, like making a movie, f.ex., but as a point'n'shoot it's been excellent.

If you are going to be taking a lot of low light shots of people the Fujufilm F30 can't be beat and is plenty cheap. $300 range. Also, going to B&H to get whatever you decide on will save you a lot of money. Only problem on that front is that today is saturday so they aren't open.

dpreview.com is a good place to get any camera reviews.

Oh, and here is the link for B&H:

For good color saturation buy a Nikon. For quick and easy use buy a Sony.

Next time you're in the market for a new toy, take a look at the reviews at cnet.com

Incidentally, I recently bought an Olympus FE-190.
It's got 6 megapixels, and it's very, very small.
Amazingly, it's got a 2.5" screen which is awesome, considering it's an inexpensive camera.

Now, I want a new digital camera, too!

Posted by: jay at November 4, 2006 07:00 PM

Oh, I second bad boy's sentiments on Cnet. GREAT SITE! Very useful reviews.

What did you get?

I'm surprised you haven't posted more photos, Karol. A cigarrette butt in an ashtray doesn't cut it. lol! How about "A Day In The Glamorous Life of Karol" pictorial?

Posted by: jay at November 6, 2006 11:07 AM

I just posted 100 pictures, actually, haha. I am drunkish in nearly all of them, it was my best friend's 30th bday and it was an open bar. She's the hot blonde in the shots.

Flickr is acting up...should be up shortly.

Photos look good, Karol. So, do you ever invite "he who whines excessively about men/women relationships" to these parties and introduce him to your gal pals?

Posted by: jay at November 6, 2006 11:41 AM

I try. He never wants to come. And he doesn't whine exactly, he just wants no part of the insanity.

Posted by: Karol at November 6, 2006 11:50 AM

Right. Because we all know that being lonely and miserable is sane. lol!

Posted by: jay at November 6, 2006 11:58 AM

I know y'all aren't talking about who I think you're talking about.

Posted by: Allah at November 6, 2006 12:14 PM

We just want to see the person y'all think we're not talking about happy.

Posted by: jay at November 6, 2006 12:36 PM

That person is happy. Because he's smart enough to avoid the emotional wreckage other people have to deal with.

Posted by: Allah at November 6, 2006 12:49 PM

We'll see how happy that person is on New Year's Eve when he's swapping spit with his sister -- if he is even lucky enough to do that.

Posted by: jay at November 6, 2006 01:33 PM

Now, now.

Posted by: Karol at November 6, 2006 01:41 PM

I'll be alone on New Year's Eve, enduring one unhappy evening compared to the 364 happy ones I spend each year.

There are no perfect options. Just "better" and "worse."

Posted by: Allah at November 6, 2006 01:56 PM

Who's talking about you? Narcisst.
