So what would happen if this album finally hit the streets and it sucked?
Posted by: Shawn at December 2, 2006 09:25 PMMe too.
And, if it sucked, I would still want to decide for myself.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at December 2, 2006 11:45 PMKurt Anderson did a segment on Studio 360 about Axl's quixotic quest for the "perfect" rock album a while back.
The way he was described Rose almost seemed more disturbed than Brian Wilson.
It is a bit sad though.
Posted by: Gerard at December 3, 2006 01:44 AMAxl is tragic. He used to be really cool. Now he is just bloated and washed-up.
Posted by: W.C. Varones at December 3, 2006 12:16 PMI've never understood athletes, film directors, or musicians who hyperbolize their forthcoming game/film/album as 'what the world has been waiting for !'
When one personally sets the bar so high, it becomes nearly impossible to meet the expectation---even if it does turn out to be a great final product.
And you know the anticipation of the project only elicits wise-guy critics to scrutinize the new project with a fine tooth comb.
Though, I suppose, when you're as big as G'N'R was, such scrutiny may be inevitible.
I just don't think its wise to INVITE the critics to dare to NOT dig your new project.
If I were Axl, I'd ditch the "My appearance suggest I've spent the weekend---er, past 15 years---hanging out in Route 66 biker bars", lose the facial hair, get rid of the braids/cornrows or whatever---and clean up with sharp, slimming suits similar to which Brandon Flowers of The Killers wears. (He'll still look 'dangerous.')
I know that sounds like a sacrilegious suggestion, but I think he needs to show everyone that he's offering something NEW, rather than just a nostalgiac retro trip down memory lane, fifteen years later.
Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 were released in summer of 1991---most people presently college aged(and younger) do not "know" G'N'R as a modern artist, as weird as that sounds.
To us in '91, Axl would be the equivalent of an artist, who, hadn't released new material since...1976 !
I'll definitely be interested to hear the new album. "Patience," and "November Rain" are still an awesome one-two punch of melancholy songs to listen to on a dark, brooding winter night.
Posted by: BadBoyInASuit at December 3, 2006 09:41 PMI'm glad I never liked Puns n' Poses to begin with. It's still more fun laughing at those that are convinced they are relevant. I've seen them live too. Yes, they actually showed up and played. It was horrible.
