Conversation
"You have such an American outlook" - slightly snotty but mostly just drunk New Zealander.
"Um, well, ah"- Young New Jersey guy who is only vaguely aware that he is being insulted.
"C'mon, say thank you. That's right, I have an American outlook, thank you for noticing"- Me, unable to mind my own business.

Good on you, Karol.
If he said to me, "You have such an European outlook", I would have tipped over the table on him and started a bar fight.
(I have always wanted to that but never had the opportunity.)
American outlook? You should've shot him. That's American. :)
Posted by: ccs178 (Chris) at December 20, 2006 11:46 AMBravo! I don't know who I would have slapped first. The NZ guy for being an ass or the Jersey guy for being stupid.
Posted by: StB at December 20, 2006 12:36 PMAlright Jake, your next time in NY, we'll go out with The Dude and start a bar fight!
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at December 20, 2006 01:10 PMA drunk New Zealander? Now there's a walking stereotype!
Posted by: Marco at December 20, 2006 03:07 PMYou'd really fight a guy over how "American" he thinks you are? Why do you care? And, by fighting him, wouldn't you be proving his implicit point--that Americans are a rip-roarin bunch of A-holes who'll fight anyone who differs from them?
I don't mean to provoke--I think I get the point that you don't want to be pigeonholed into the category "American" (just as that New Zealander wouldn't have liked it if you called him a "Kiwi" or whatever).
But beating the guy up would only "prove his point," at least to himself. I don't imagine he'd look at the next American favourably, either.
Anyway, just some thoughts....
Posted by: S.Astrum at December 20, 2006 03:35 PMYou should have asked this guy where he's from. When he replies 'New Zealand,' tell him you've never heard of it.
Posted by: scot at December 20, 2006 03:56 PMWhat do you expect from our foriegn adventures? Our "Israel-above-all" policy has wreacked our national stature, everywhere. The Middle East is in chaos. However, Iraq is a diversion. As the army attacks Iraq, the US gov't erodes rights at home by suspending habeas corpus, stealing private lands, banning books like "America Deceived" from Amazon, rigging elections, conducting warrantless wiretaps and starting 2 illegal wars based on lies. Soon, another US false-flag operation will occur (sinking of an Aircraft Carrier by Mossad) and the US will invade Iran, (on behalf of Israel). Anyway, someone should have kicked that New Zealander's ass (Where's Old Zealand??)
Final link (before Google Books bends to gov't demands and censors the title):
America Deceived (book)
"Screw you, Kiwi, it's Texan!"
Posted by: Shawn at December 20, 2006 09:59 PMIs he still hawking that book? Must not be selling well. Crappy writing is the most efficient form of censorship. Well, that and the crazy.
When he said he was from NZ you should said "baaaah", you know, like the sheep noise. Cuz, see, there's this stereotype about lonely NZ guys and their sheep. I don't know if there's any truth to it, but you'll blow a hole in his ego you can drive a hummer through.
Posted by: Eric at December 20, 2006 10:37 PM"Tell him you've never heard of it."
That would have worked before LOTR was produced.
Posted by: Gerard at December 21, 2006 02:21 AMI was once like him (http://www.alarmingnews.com/archives/004732.html), of course I was a teenager and didn't know any better. If someone has something to say, whether about our foreign policy or about our guns or any other feature of American existence, go ahead and say it, then wait for me to respond, and believe me respond I will. I don't mind if someone has a problem with America or Americans, just don't do this passive-aggressive nonsense.
But don't worry, guys, he got his. This exchange happened at a poker table and I took his whole stack (over $300) when he overplayed his top pair.
Posted by: Karol at December 21, 2006 04:33 AMWhat the hell is an American outlook ? Supporting Bush in Iraq ? Recent polls show 56% want us out and 70% of us do not approve of the current administartion's handling of it. Not supporting Bush ? The only thing I would really define as an American outlook would be supporting the ideas and legacy of the Founders. And God knows the empty suits who support big government and care more about what happens abroad than what happens here have not supported the ideas of the Founders for well over a century now.

Posted by: joaquinochoa at December 21, 2006 09:44 AMWhere's Old Zealand
Denmark.
Wrong old Zealand - it was named after the province of the Netherlands (and not the Danish island) by Dutch mapmakers
Von Bek, the conversation was about the kid considering "success" the goal of life which the New Zealander found so American.
Posted by: Karol at December 21, 2006 03:35 PMOh, then the guy is a jackass.
Posted by: Von Bek at December 22, 2006 01:21 PMLMAO get over it already.
You just did exactly the same thing by saying the guy was a NZer, snotty & drunk. You are just as bad.
