Bugs can help in cracking cases (by guest blogger Maia)
NY Times has an interesting story about a forensic entomologist who uses insects to figure out how long a murder victim or dead person has been dormant.

When a human dies, female insects will be attracted to the body. They’ll enter any of our nine exposed orifices, lay eggs or larvae there. A forensic entomologist will identify these immature insects and measure their size. You look at their size and development, and measure the growth against weather conditions.

Damn.
I always liked to look at bugs eating away at dead bodies. Now I find out that I could have made big money with my hobby.
Well, it's the Times, so it must be a lie. I wonder what they're covering up this time, and why they haven't apologized? Where's the outrage?!???!!1!!
