I want to fall in love, not in line

*Mark Kilmer at Red State makes the RR comparison.

*The boys at Save The GOP like Thompson and they rarely like anybody.

*Bill Frist endorses a Thompson presidential run. I'll try not to let that sour me.

*Allah calls Thompson "golden" on the issues.

*Hotline throws out an idea for a Law&Order presidency featuring a fusion ticket of Fred Thompson and Sam Watterson.

*Frank J. has a list of serious reasons Thompson can be the guy.

*There's a Draft Thompson blog written by what looks like a cute girl. We can't let that go to waste, people. Draft him! Let's go!

*This is from a liberal host of "Young Turks" on Air America:

In the end, I have to admit that I was impressed by Thompson. Sometimes when you meet someone you get a sense of whether they are real or fake. And sometimes you are taken in by an amiable, charming person you might not otherwise agree with.

It's hard for me to tell which category I fall into in this instance, but I came away with the impression that Senator Thompson was not your average politician. He really was frustrated with the way the system is set against change. He was very open about his thoughts, his weaknesses and his ideas on real issues.

I am sure that if he ran I would find many areas of significant disagreement with him, but as a person in a room talking with someone he had never met before, he was friendly, honest and very likeable. Even more important than all of that, he was - at least for this conversation - eminently reasonable.

*Proof at Say Anything quotes Thompson on the attorney firings and writes that he'll try not to turn SA into a Thompson lovefest. Oh, go on. It's nice to be excited about a candidate, isn't it?

*And just so I keep my feet on the ground and don't get too involved in a candidate that has yet to even announce, Bill Hobbs lists some possible problems with a Thompson candidacy. Can anyone confirm or deny that Thompson's positions on illegal immigration mirror McCain's (McCain's position, as far as I can gather, is to rail against amnesty and then co-introduce a bill with Ted Kennedy to grant just that.)?

Yeah, Thompson's record on the subject was mixed.

Immigration Votes

Proviso: These were votes taken over half a decade ago-when the prospect of a blanket amnesty was less certain, and when the chief threat to this country was Communist China.

Keep in mind, Thompson was one of the leading voices condemning the Clinton administration's selloff of key military technology-in return for campaign donations-to the PRC, and he-supposedly-was very hawkish in opposing amnesty when he left the U.S. Senate.

My sticking point is that any REPUBLICAN candidate be opposed to amnesty, which would be a 100% improvement upon the stance of our current incumbent POTUS.

So far Thompson crosses that threshold.

This is probably good enough to sell him to the middle 40% of the country. I'm thinking seriously about him. I prefer someone who will look at a situation realistically and work to move it, rather than stick his fingers in his ears and go "La la la," and paints a pretty picture over the ugly truth. Like this liberal guy, I probably don't have a lot in common with him ideologically, but I might be inclined to vote for him anyways.

Cute girl? I thought you were trying to stop the rumors.

Karol, we need to have a serious talk.

Only as they pertain to Dawn Summers. ;-)

FDT is the best thing the GOP field can ever hope to happen. He will energise the GOP voters who might stay home for Guiliani/McCain/Romney. Let's face it, a Republican candidate is NOT going to win trying to embrace the left, not in the current climate.

As for the so-called 'lukewarm' response from within the party re Fred's possible bid, I can only say I don't think they've read the mood of their own voters at all. This is the most enthusiasm I've seen for a candidate in the entire field. Fred may not be hugely popular with the party honchos, but the GOP base is saying loudly, we need this guy.
