Bright ideas
This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard:
Operation Lucky Bag is an NYPD sting operation in which New York’s Finest leave unattended packages on the subway and then nab people for carrying them away.
And I disagree with Mr. Berger, this is not so New York. Most New Yorkers eschew wasting time and money like this.

It's not so New York, it's so New York government.
Don't they have some pedicabs to harass?
Posted by: meep at March 15, 2007 07:04 AMIt's not "so New York". It's "Boston South".
Posted by: Pokerwolf at March 15, 2007 08:23 AMMight be fun to sit in the subway stations and call the cops and report a suspicious bomb-like package when they drop them off. Isn't that entrapment, anyways?
Posted by: David at March 15, 2007 09:32 AMWhat's up with NYC and bad ideas these days ? Driving to work this morning, I got to hear about how the NYC City Council decided to ban metal baseball bats since they are too dangerous for kids looking to field the ball. Sheesh.
Posted by: Von Bek at March 15, 2007 10:01 AMI agree with meep. Complete wastes of time and money by the government are as totally New York as stickball and street fairs.
Posted by: Jim Lesczynski at March 15, 2007 10:49 AMI can't even figure out what is illegal about it. Finders Keepers has the force of law, no?
Posted by: Charles at March 15, 2007 12:31 PMThat sting operation is completely retarded and i'm pretty sure it has been stopped once the cases got to court and hit the media.
The NYPD is completely driven by numbers and crime stats. This is a result of that.
This article sums up part of the numbers game.

"The source suggested that Lucky Bag was cooked up by recently promoted police Transit Chief James Hall to boost his division's arrest numbers. "You don't get promoted through the ranks unless your numbers are better than the other guy's," the source said.
An NYPD spokesman denied the claim."
Posted by: PAUL at March 15, 2007 02:06 PMLegally no crime is committed. The finder has superior title to forgotten property against all others except the true owner. How do the cops prove the "perp" wasn't taking the property to transit authorities or trying to locate the true owner?
Posted by: Frozen Caveman Lawyer at March 15, 2007 05:31 PMmayor mike strikes again. totally agree w/frozen caveman. what crime is actually committed? wouldn't that be considered entrapment?
Posted by: anna at March 15, 2007 09:44 PMI agree. It serves no useful purpose for NYC to use this tactic. As they say, why not spend the energy catching real criminals.
Try again Big Apple.
This is ridiculous. Why are they fooling around with this kind of nonsense when there's people sleeping in the subway?
