"I didn't question her patriotism, I questioned her judgment "-Dick Cheney
Nancy Pelosi is visiting Israel and then traveling on to Syria. The Bush administration has asked her not to visit Syria since, in short, it's a "a county that is a state sponsor of terror, one that is trying to disrupt the Senora government in Lebanon and one that is allowing foreign fighters to flow into Iraq from its borders". Nancy Pelosi doesn't care about any of that, though, and will go anyway.
But how will she get in?
From Wikipedia's Syria page:
For American citizens, the Syrian government has tightened restrictions and is requiring visas issued from the embassy in DC even if you are applying in the country you have residence in. It is vitally important that there is no evidence of a visit to Israel (called "Occupied Palestine" by Syria) in your passport, i.e. a stamp or visa from Israel, or Jordanian or Egyptian border crossings with Israel. Likewise you shouldn't say that you have or will travel to Israel to officials in the embassy or at the border. It is rumoured this restriction is very strict - if you have a brand new passport or a period in the middle east with gaps between the exit and entry stamps, a visit to Israel might be suspected and your visa will be denied, or your entry will be denied even with visa.
Gosh, I hope they don't read Drudge Report.

Gosh:
I hope she does get into Syria, maybe they will keep her there.
Posted by: rdavis at April 1, 2007 09:42 AMYou ask an easy question my friend, it is because she is a traitor to the American way of life, an appeasement dog, of the cut and run society! Truth is she is just haoni jane made over because I am sure “her side” will make out very well from the propaganda view they will make of it! I wonder if they will show her holding a rocket propelled grenade launcher?
Posted by: bluejacket at April 1, 2007 09:43 AMIn other words, Pelosi is on board with the idea that "inserting congress into an international crisis while ongoing would not be helpful" when it comes to Britain, one of our two most reliable allies in the world. But she has no problem handing Syria, a terrorist nation currently in a declared state of war with Israel, the OTHER of our two most reliable allies in the world, a state visit they can use as a propaganda tool.
When people behave this way outside of congress they are sedated, then taken to hospitals for observation. But Nancy Pelosi makes it the policy of the Democratic house of representatives and what happens? Is it first page news in the paper today? Did you see it on the network news on Friday or last night? Did the Today show do a feature on what havoc behavior like this wreaks on our status in the world? On the attitudes of our ALLIES towards who and what we are with Democrats in charge?
Posted by: Ken Berwitz at April 1, 2007 09:49 AMComrades,
The sad part is that what should happen when she returns and what will happen are entirely different.
What SHOULD happen is that she is met by Justice Department officials who arrest her and charge her with Treason, with Aiding & Abetting our enemies and toss her butt in jail. At the very least, she should be stripped of her seat, her speakership, and censored before both chambers before being sent home.
What WILL happen is she will be embraced by ANSWER, CODE PINK, etc, and feted as the heroine of the lunatic, anti-American left. What's next? Will she have a love child with Hugo Chavez to show her solidarity with his repressive regime?
Maybe, after all, it's time for the citizenry to consider using their rights under the 2nd Ammendment to dissolve Congress and start over with a clean slate. Just sayin'.....
Respects,
Posted by: Gwedd at April 1, 2007 09:50 AMActually it's very easy to avoid the Israeli visa problem. It is done by not having your passport stamped when entering Israel. The visa and stamp is done on a separate piece of paper carried in your passport, which is discarded or removed when you enter an Arab country.
It is common practice.
Posted by: Corky Boyd at April 1, 2007 09:53 AMThat passport thing is also done to those who visit Cuba. But that's another issue. She'll be able to get into Syra because she's an elected US official. Though she shouldn't be there, they should treat her OK. They may maker her wear a scarf, though.
She'll be okay, becuase after all, she's on their side.
Posted by: Brian at April 1, 2007 10:28 AMNancy Pelosi HAS to go to Syria. She has so much to tell them! She has so much news!
She has to tell them the US will retreat from Iraq and the War on Terror, the prisoners of war in Guantanamo soon will be released or given trials in American civil courts, that wiretapping of Al-Qaeda phone calls to the US will soon be stopped, and much, much more!
Posted by: michael class at April 1, 2007 10:40 AMShe will bypass all the Syrian checkpoints by riding in below radar on her broom. But first, she will overfly Iraq, and skywrite the message "SURRENDER, DOR... I MEAN AMERICA!"
Posted by: Korla Pundit at April 1, 2007 10:50 AMFrom now on she gets photo shopped wearing a dust rag on her head!
Posted by: Tray Tor at April 1, 2007 10:57 AMPelosi in Syria? Red carpet with flowers, no less. Her only "stumbling block" will be what she says to the Israeli Parliament today in her "I-have-a-dream-scheme" speech.
Even Syrians are familiar with the "When in Rome, do/say as the Romans," so they will forgive her -- plus she's traveling with our only congressman of muslim faith, Mr. can't-we-just-get-along Ellison.
Holocaust survivor/congressman Lantos may have to stay on the plane, but he won't be alone for long .....
Look for Republican Hobson to be the designated-escort for the British hostages that Pelosi (up-staging Jesse Jackson/Jimmah Cartah -- much to Hillary's dismay) will extricate single-handedly from the grasp of rioting Iranians and a short little guy wearing an Eisenhower jacket.
Can you smell spell Nobel? How about nefarious? Nonsense?
"...a group of Republican lawmakers has embarked on their own trip to Syria. Michael Lowry, a spokesman for Representative Robert Aderholt, said that the Alabama lawmaker will visit Syria as part of a Republican delegation led by Representative Frank Wolf, a Virginia Republican. Wolf is the top Republican on the House appropriations subcommittee that funds the State Department."
Hilarious that none of you have yet accused a Republican of treason... but, of course, sadly unsurprising.
Posted by: Alex at April 1, 2007 11:20 AMSpeaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is set to visit Syria, a country President Bush has shunned, “despite being asked by the administration not to go.” “In our view, it is not the right time to have these sort of high-profile visitors to Syria,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters Friday.
Several members of Congress, including Sens. Arlen Specter (R-PA) and John Kerry (D-MA), have visited Syria in recent months over Bush objections. During his visit, Specter “stressed the importance of reactivating the dialogue between the United States and Syria to achieve security and stability in the Middle East.”
Pelosi’s office releases a statement: “As recommended by the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan delegation led by Speaker Pelosi intends to discuss a wide range of security issues affecting the United States and the Middle East with representatives of governments in the region, including Syria.”
Pelosi is accompanied on the trip by Foreign Affairs Chairman Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), Rules Chairwoman Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), Natural Resources Chairman Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.), Rep. David Hobson (R-Ohio).
I tend to vote Republican. If the Republicans are doing what Pelosi is accused of doing, then they too could be accused of treason. If they are going to counter Pelosi's arguably treasonable acts, then perhaps not. I somehow doubt they would be given permission by Pelosi to run in her entourage if they were going to undercut her appeasement agenda.
I guess "me too" Republicanism didn't die in 1994 like I'd thought.
"I'll vote to burn the house down. Just do it slower." Paraphrasing Sen. Rockefeller

Posted by: Capitalist Infidel at April 1, 2007 11:42 AMIs she showing us her ignorance? Or is she just showing us her proclivity for bad judgment? Either way, her actions along with other high ranking Democrats will cause every sane person with US Citizenship to Vote anyone but a Democrat for the next twenty years. Especially in 2008! Here's why -
Nancy Pelosi's Syria visit will be treason. It is a huge assistance to our enemies for a US Official of such a high level as the Speaker of The House to visit. In Arab culture a personal visit and/or "audience" by a high ranking official, King, President or Prime Minister has great significance, for such an audience is only granted to the worthy. Is Assad worthy of such a high honor? NO, but Al Jazeera and the Syrian media machine will certainly use it to show how good they are and how bad the US is - because of President Bush! they will further show - and they will ultimately justify to their people that Islamist aims are more powerful that Capitalism or the West or America! Power is all that matters in the Middle East; and negotiation and appearances are parts and parcel with POWER. As to how this will certainly affect our Allies, this make everyone nervous: how can they trust the US to keep to a plan and not leave everyone high and dry as soon as things get difficult. Is the US worth following? Is America acting like a true Leader? Come on people...Pelosi should not be allowed to play politics with all of our lives. She is treasonous in her behavior if she has any contact with Assad !! And this matters to the whole world, right now and will affect us all for generations to come.
Posted by: rpaine at April 1, 2007 12:01 PMDave, do you remember how OBL threatened the US if we voted for Bush? Remember how the MSM and the Democrats did there best to smother the story? Same thing here. The MSM correctly see that publicizing the trip would help the conservatives.

A lot of us called the RINO's that assisted the enemy everything but an American and sent some of them home with more to go. Something a democrat with their head up their A** will never do. Just look at Hanoi John, the fat guy from Ma and Leaky Leahy as good examples of traitors being reelected to congress. At least 25% of the dhimmi members of congress have comitted treason and could/should have been sent to prison. When you can show the dhimmi leadership a video of one of their members accepting a $100,000 bribe they don't vote him out of office, they promote him. There is a big difference in a Patriotic republican and a traitorous democrat.

Posted by: jhow66 at April 1, 2007 03:07 PMIt's not clear whether, when Gull (11:15 AM comment) mentioned Jesse Jackson, he was thinking specifically of JJ's intervention with Syria in 1980s to "win" the release of an American pilot. But I think it's worth mentioning -- in order to scrutinize stingently the implications, deals, and costs of whatever possible benefits of such leading Democrats' meetings with the enemy.
Related: my mention last year of Jackson's trip to Beirut during Israel's (botched) war with Hezbollah.
Posted by: Jeremayakovka at April 1, 2007 05:02 PMTake a deep breath people. George Washington and Jimmy Madison and the rest of the gang in Phillie back in the hot summer of 87 decided:
"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.
The Congress shall have power to declare the punishment of treason, but no attainder of treason shall work corruption of blood, or forfeiture except during the life of the person attainted."
Now I know the socialists on the left and the Trotskyite neocons have little use for the Founding Fathers and the US Constitution but there it is. Pelosi is not a traitor. Those who put another country over ours, whether John Walker Lindh or Jonathan Pollard, are. And frankly they should fry.

Posted by: Karol at April 1, 2007 06:37 PMWhy focus on the issue from an "at home" point of view? I believe we can help her get into Syria. It's actually pretty simple. No need for diplomatic issues like a Visa or passport. I just hope she brought along a good pair of walking shoes.
She can fly here to Iraq, put on body armor, we'll offer her a weapon to defend herself (but we already know her answer to that offer), she can ride along with us in our unimproved Humvees that we can't afford to make improvements on because of lack of funding, and then she can get out about 15-20 miles from the border with us to start walking. The terrain is a bit rough but she’s apparently an expert on things here and how to deal with the Middle East & terrorist so it shouldn't be a problem.
Once we get close (200-300 meters) she can put on the rose colored glasses and just walk across the border. The villages and towns aren’t that far from that point. She can then pay a local cab driver for a ride further into country but don’t forget to bring extra cash along to bribe (oops, negotiate) with the authorities to grant her safe passage to the capital.
I know there’s a lot of sarcasm in my tone but, it is actually that easy. That’s how we’re able to pick off insurgents night after night when they come across the border to kill us. Thank you for your time and I hope this short note finds you and yours doing well. I can be found at http://coconutcommando.blogspot.com/

There you go talking sense again Von Bek.

One might argue that is second in sucession to the presidency, and as a member, even Speaker, of the House of Representatives, Nancy is an agent of the government, not in private correspondece, and allowed to authorize her own travel to Syria.
Or a more narrow view, since the Senate is the only body expressly charged with the making of treaties with foreign countries, only Senators have the right, duly implied, to travel to foreign countries on behalf of the US. The executive is afforded the privilege of agency, but the authority stops there.
