"Oh thank goodness, Al Sharpton is here"
You're not going to believe this, but, Al Sharpton is using race-baiting to deflect the criticism he received for bashing Mormonism. I know, I know, you totally thought he'd take the high road, apologize, and take his lumps. And you're shocked to find out that he's not all class like you imagined. Try not to cry.

So there is no low to which Sharpton won't stoop?
I just wish some black leader would step up and say "Al Sharpton is a race-bating creep who is holding black folks back".
God forbid.
Posted by: Sean at May 10, 2007 06:59 PMMichael Eric Dyson is being interviewed by Steve Malzberg-on this very subject-right now.
So far he hasn't broken into rhyme.
I can't say I'm disappointed.
Posted by: Gerard at May 10, 2007 10:11 PMOops.
Professor Mark Lamont Hill.
Who evidently has a career as a voiceover artist if Dyson ever moves over to Temple U.
Posted by: Gerard at May 10, 2007 10:19 PMI'm thinking the same as Sean. Will the real Black leadership please stand up?
We are expected to acknowledge the presence of a "black community" and its significance, rather than be a color-blind society... so when will that community recognize what men like Sharpton do to their image?
Sharpton should be living in exile.
Posted by: michael parker at May 11, 2007 07:17 AMSharpton sucks. While I have a lot of doubts about whether Mormonism is a form of Christianity (Father Neuhaus did an excellent article on the same matter in First Things some time ago and ended up in the same area), there is a hell of a lot to bash Romney on. His faith is not one of them; his political history and flip flops are fair game. Oh don't worry. Hewitt and the Grand Old Pravda machine will take care of it all soon enough. Like they did before:
Republicans: Big government is bad.
Grand Old Pravda: Bush is for big government. Big government is conservative.
Republicans: Da comrade. The Party.
2008 version:
Republicans: Being pro abortion and pro sodomy marriage is bad.
Grand Old Pravda: Romney and Rudy are for pro abortion and pro sodomy marriage. Abortion and sodomy marriage are conservative.
Republicans: Da comrade. The Party.
Romney makes John Kerry look like a model of principle.
Posted by: Von Bek at May 11, 2007 07:56 AMGiving that the Mormon religion is based on the ramblings of one nutter a few hundred years ago I am not sure how you can take them seriously. Sharpton may be a nutjob, but the Mormons do have a racist past (i.e. non whites are the way they are because it is a punishment from God.
Okay, they are not flying aircraft into buildings (as I am sure the predictable counter arguments will go) but that doesn't detract from the fact that the Mormon religion is shady to say the least and has a very sinister (and deliberately buried) past. It's just a shame that it's only Sharpton that is highlighting it.
Posted by: Urbane McMeercat at May 11, 2007 08:14 AMAl Sharpton stull the biggoted troublemaker he always has been whata pathetic fool
Posted by: golden phoenix at May 11, 2007 09:57 AMNot quite a leader, but here's Charles Barkley's take on Sharpton in a TNR interview:
You mentioned Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson earlier. What are your opinions of them?
I know them both, but they are race-baiters who have double standards for white racism and black racism.
Posted by: Alceste at May 11, 2007 10:55 AMHow is the Church of LDS racist, but Obama's churchman-whose entire demented theology is based upon black racism and "scientific" socialism, a la Marx-not, just out of curiosity?

I don't know, they possibly both are. Is that supposed to constitute a defence of the LDS ?
Posted by: Urbane McMeercat at May 11, 2007 01:28 PMI'm not defending anyone, certainly not an anti-Semitic, white-hating, riot-inciting scumbag like Sharpton.
My point is that there is only one candidate-to the best of my recollection-currently running for POTUS who belongs to an avowedly racist church, and it's not Romney.
Posted by: Gerard at May 11, 2007 02:01 PMA few years ago sharpton was calling for blacks to riot if two whites being tried for murdering a blackman but the murderers were convicted so that stupid jackass did,nt get his riot frankly they should hold this jerk liable for his stupid ranting

But, naturally, you'll zealously defend and excuse another death cult (and extremely racist and bigoted) "religion" that worships a mass murdering, goat-buggering pedophile as their prophet. How uber enlightened and progressive of you.
It's just a shame that it's only Sharpton that is highlighting it.
So now the dubious, racist and self aggrandizing sleazebag Al Sharpton is your spokesman and muse? I didn't think it was possible, but you've exceeded your already tremendous legacy of stratospheric stupidity.
Cunt.
Posted by: Radical Redneck at May 13, 2007 09:39 AMI think that Urbane McMeercat's information on Mormonism is severely misguided. There is no doctrine of Mormons that states that non-whites are that way as some sort of punishment from God. Please check your facts or the source of your references.
Posted by: Nate at May 15, 2007 11:26 AM"the ramblings of one nutter a few hundred years ago"?
When you can't one damn simple fact correct, why should we take you at all seriously?
No, I'm not Mormon, but I did live in Utah for 14 years. I know Mormon theology better than probably 99.9% of the members. The history is even easier. So if you have any questions, ask me.
