My night in pictures
I went to a terrific dinner tonight celebrating Commentary Magazine.
My date was the dashing James Taranto:
John Bolton gave a good, scary talk about our current world situation (in short: we have to deal with Iran and North Korea, and soon). He also objected to being called a "neo-conservative", saying that he was likely the only person in the room who had supported Barry Goldwater.
Editor of the NY Sun, Ira Stoll, was there. He said to me "I think I know you." I said "Yes, we're friends on Facebook." It's all very modern. Ira claims he will return to blogging at It Shines For All at some point. That'd be nice. Here's a pic of Ira and James:
A highlight for me was meeting Mark Steyn. When I told Peter I had met him he joked that Mark Steyn had asked me "are you that blogger who links to every one of my columns?" I assured Peter that is most bloggers.
A shot of Mark and I:
I had seen Mark yesterday at a New Criterion panel which also featured Roger Kimball. It was terrific and is recapped here and here.
Mark Steyn, Roger Kimball and James Taranto:
I'm sorry I have to post a picture of James Taranto with his eyes closed but isn't Larry Kudlow just the spiffiest dresser? I am always admiring his look:
Oh yeah, and I met Henry Kissinger. That pretty much rocked:
I sat next to the daughter of Norman Podhoretz (who had been Commentary's editor for 35 years), I believe her name was Rachel Abrams. She was very interesting and funny. Sadly, my photo blogging of the event is incomplete as I didn't take her picture.
Best of luck to Commentary and its new blog Contentions (currently being added in my "Here, There and Everywhere" section). They know how to throw a party.

Mark Steyn! Did I tell you I'm in love?
*collapses on the floor*
Posted by: Tatyana at May 17, 2007 09:22 AMWow. You got your picture taken with every Republican in NYC.
I thought Mark Steyn was from New Hampshire?
Posted by: Gerard at May 17, 2007 12:11 PMWow. *Wow.*
Posted by: Anwyn at May 17, 2007 01:47 PMIf we needed to go after Iran and North Korea, shouldn't we have gone after them before getting all tied up in Iraq? Or did the Iran and North Korea things suddenly appear out of nowhere?
Posted by: Michael at May 17, 2007 02:53 PMKudlow looks like he was looking for a *bump*
Posted by: Dan the Fiscal Conservative at May 17, 2007 05:26 PMFunny that. My essay on the cogency of the term "State terrorism" lead me to Commentary Magazine this very morning. Issue from last summer with an article titled "Why Israel is free to choose its own borders."
Don't agree with the central thrust of the argument but an interesting article nonetheless.
Did you happen to come across Michael Krauss and or Peter Pham.
Ideally your article would say you WERE to attend tonight. Would do wonders for my essay but nevermind.
Posted by: Nick at May 17, 2007 08:41 PMI don't think I have ever seen lovelier photos of you. Like a fine wine, you have only improved with age.
Posted by: Von Bek at May 18, 2007 07:49 AMVon Bek, the last time I heard someone dare try that compliment was Mr. Furley to Lana on a "Three's Company" episode. :)
Karol, you did look great. And the Kudlow, of course, sets the tone for every man who would like to be well-dressed. I'll have to pull up my picture of him at the independent Young Republicans meeting.
Keith Olbermann tries with the pinstripes, but Kudlow succeeds. Tiki Barber looks great in Johnston & Murphy's catalogs, but Larry's surpasses that by being just elegant. He proves that cufflinks and pocket handkerchiefs never went out of style. Not sure about that color of tie, though, but it could be the flash. I liked Kissinger's choice of colors.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at May 18, 2007 11:48 AMHey. I'm getting stale in the September of my life...er...well early 30s but even still, this comes from a guy who feels as if President John Tyler named me like envoy to Montevideo in March 1842 and I come back only to find the universe has all gone mad. Fresh compliments are not my thing. Nonetheless, I do think Karol is getting better looking as the years go by and stand by my comment.

Haha, thanks Von Bek. And you knew me when I was like 23!
O/T, I posted a question to you recently. Not sure if you saw it: http://www.alarmingnews.com/archives/006006.html (8:06pm)
