Former NYC mayor Ed Koch calls for making cigarettes illegal:
Cigarette smoking is not only dangerous to your health, it’s a dirty, filthy habit which can give you bad breath, a wrinkled face, yellow fingers and holes in your clothes. Let’s save smokers from themselves and eliminate the enormous societal costs. Let’s ban the manufacture and sale of tobacco products in the United States.
While I completely oppose this kind of measure, it actually makes more sense than randomly banning smoking just about everywhere. Still, the day I need a politician to save me from myself will be a cold day in hell indeed.

No. It doesn't. It doesn't make more sense than randomly banning it in public (not my own private property).
Posted by: E3 at July 17, 2007 03:52 PMThey've banned smoking in private places like bars and are looking to ban it in cars. So, logically, if they're saying that smoking isn't allowed anywhere, it is more reasonable to trying banning it outright. It's more honest.
Posted by: Karol at July 17, 2007 03:54 PMits banned in cars? news to me... i think you're referring to the fact that its banned in cars with little kids - a second person whose life liberty property is infringed upon... as kids under 18 aren't legally allowed to choose to leave the car... so they're trapped in the smoke.
as far as bars... its been a long time since bars and restaurants and stores were anything close to "private property" (for some reason). the oppression started around the time of the civil rights act... fucking tyrrany!

I would almost start smoking just because Koch is such a despicable putz. You're right, Karol, we might as well ban it outright. Government needs to be honest that we no real freedom left -- only what government permits. It should finally expose itself as the nanny state it is.
The care of every man's soul belongs to himself. But what if he neglect the care of it? Well what if he neglect the care of his health or estate, which more nearly relate to the state. Will the magistrate make a law that he shall not be poor or sick? Laws provide against injury from others; but not from ourselves. God himself will not save men against their wills.
By the way, I didn't write the above paragraph. Thomas Jefferson did.

Crime that was confined to a minute geographical area within the City, was diffuse and had limited financial resources became a multilayered a group of interlocking criminal syndicates that controlled nearly every major aspect of the economy at some stage of production and/or consumption.

Certain dogs - proposed ban. Whole milk in schools - banned. The list goes on and on and on. Why shouldn't we think that an ourtight prohibition of all cigarettes is the next step in NYC silliness?

My wife was finally able to kick the habit before she got pregnant with our now first born beautiful baby gilr, so I tought I'll share the resource that she has used to help her quit the smoking habit with as many people as I can.
She was a heavy smoker for about ten years and just a couple of weeks after finding out about the program that I have researched online, she was able to quit smoking permanently and now can't stop telling people about how she had kicked the habit for good.
