Eliot Spitzer doesn't care about national security
N.Y. Drops Citizenship Proof For Driver's Licenses
"We're changing our policy with respect to getting more people out of shadows and into the system so people don't hide they're here," [Embattled Governor Eliot] Spitzer said.
Sure, why should someone committing a crime have to hide? Let's get them out in the open! Out of the shadows! Into cars. And also onto planes, of course, since a driver's license is all you need. I used to do some work for a group called the Coalition for A Secure Driver's License. I don't know that they're still active but this is from a press release from last October:
“Eighteen of the nineteen 9/11 terrorists boarded those airplanes using driver’s licenses they never should have been issued,” said CSDL President Amanda Bowman. “After the attacks, it was learned that the terrorists possessed 63 licenses from states all across the country. And it was clear why they got them: The driver’s license is America’s internal passport, our de facto national identification card that allows holders access to airplane travel, truck rental, sensitive government and commercial buildings, wire transfers and a host of other terrorism tools and targets. The driver’s license is a terrorist weapon of choice, and Congress must act on that reality,” Ms. Bowman continued.
So, thanks, Gov. Spitzer, for making us that much less safe. But hey, now you've got the illegal immigrant vote--all they need to register is a driver's license--all locked up.

Spitzer is bad here but at least you expect it from him. It's the "conservatives" who want amnesty (como se dice el presidente Jorge W. Bush) and making "sanctuary cities" like Rudy that we have to watch out for. Look, with a few exceptions (Tancredo on the obnoxious side, Hunter on the less obnoxious side), there ain't a dimes worth of difference between the two sides on this one. And there is a huge gap between the elites and Main Street on this one.
Posted by: Von Bek at September 22, 2007 04:11 PMYes there is a huge difference between the two sides on this one. At least the GOP is divided on the issue witnessed by last years House Bill which made it a felony to be in the USA illegally. Senate defeated that bill. Dems are not divided on the issue. They love illegals.
Posted by: Dennis D at September 22, 2007 04:24 PMSurely having street legal foreign drivers is a good thing. Using the drivers licence for the airport needs to be changed IMO, unless you include photo and fingerprint ID.
Posted by: bryan at September 22, 2007 04:25 PMSurely they'll obey the law and get driver's licenses. After all, the illegals already obeyed immigration law, right? Yeah. Right. We might as well expect violent criminals to obey gun control laws, too.
(And I say this as someone who's more open on immigration. We need to allow more people in who actually want to work, and kill the welfare state that lures the mojados.)
Safe driving is just a cover. If Pablo flunks his test, who thinks he'll stop driving his truck? The real reason they want driver's licenses is for state-certified identification, and as Karol said, it's a step to illegal voting.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at September 22, 2007 07:35 PMNY is not wide open for another massive terrorist attack compliments of their own governor. It will come, will the people of NY hold him accountable with a rope, tree, some assembly required? I'm glad I'm not related to him. Not a common name and everyone with it will be a target.
Posted by: Scrapiron at September 23, 2007 12:08 AMDear Governor Spitzer,
I am questioning your rationalization of your idea of legalizing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens? The NEWS only dwells on the idea, not the reasons for this. I would really like to know your rationale.
This seems to be a slap in the face for those of us that follow the law.
Over the years, whenever someone had a bad problem, I would tell him or her to write, to then Attorney General Spitzer, and he will straighten it out. I have always trusted in you, to do the right thing.
I don’t see how a law could be made to justify this. I suppose a law could be made to cover anything, but wouldn’t this be amoral and just plain wrong?
Sincerely,
Janice McDowell
Janice, there are millions of american citizens that have been denied valid ID on the basis of contradictory regulations of the patriot act. These catch 22 regulations are denying life-long citizens their civil rights by arguing that everyone who does not already have ID,cannot ever have one.Furthermore it is imperative to national security that as many people as possible are documented so that we know who they are and why they're here. This is the first step in acheiving that end.I would hope that you won't support the nazism inherent in the patriot act to dismiss wholesale the rights of as many as 20 million people, who by ssa assertions are primarily US citizens that have been discriminated against.Having everyone getting ID gives the state a resource from which it can be determined whether or not someone is a legal resident, citizen,or illegal foreign national.I hope that answers your question. After six years of this putting me at the risk of incarceration,I'd like to have my citizenship back!
Posted by: Ed,Ellenville,New York at September 27, 2007 07:57 AMI wonder how many of you bloggers are Native Indians or descendants of same. Oh how we tend to forget that our ancestors are all immigrants (whether legally or illegally) of one sort or another!! Moreover wouldn't you be happier knowing that the person who totalled your car is legally documented?

They are talking about a rally in Albany on 10/22. If you are interested, join the discussion. If you can't make it, spread the word.
