Song of the Day

"Wish You Were Here"- Pink Floyd

It's one of those songs you overlisten to in your youth, upload to your ipod out of a sense of obligation, and end up skipping every time it comes up. "We're just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl, year after year" was one of the most overused lyrics in high school yearbook history, but listening to it years later, and thinking about Syd Barrett instead of your high school boyfriend as one of the fish, it starts to mean something again. A beautiful song about losing someone in a very permanent way.

Depends on the reasons why you like the song. Didn't hear it much in high school, but got introduced to Floyd by my roommate. Song takes on a whole different connotation in a long-distance relationship.

that's brilliant.

I've often thought about songs that are underrated just because they are sooo played out in our youth.

As a Dylan fan, it took me a long time to re-appreciate most of his songs on his "greatest hits" album.

I can't think of any others immediately offhand that would be in this category but would be interested to hear others' opinions.

Songs are underappreciated in our youth because we don't have the emotional maturity to appreciate the sentiments. As we get older and experience more deeply, what came across as trite lyrics resound with much more force and clarity. It's the same reason why "break-up" songs tend to make you weepy right after the termination of a relationship. "Wish You Were Here" is a beautiful song and an even more beautiful album in it's entirety.

it is a very touching poignant song when you think from where it was written. Once you clear the fog that you or i may have remembered being in when we were in HS listening to it...
