I like the Dawn Eden-esque headline. Bravo!
Posted by: Fallen Sparrow at October 2, 2007 05:32 PMTook them some time. By now the harm was done, and how.
By the way: very nice place. Will come back.
Did they also fake the kidnap and 18 year solitary confinement of that guy who was gonna spill the beans about the Israeli Nuclear Weapons program?
Posted by: bryan at October 2, 2007 07:46 PMDid they also fake the kidnap and 18 year solitary confinement ...
Why do you think this is a comparable example? Is it an example of the media manipulating the news - well, not just manipulating it, lying outright...
Or are you throwing verbal poop at the Israelis out of sheer habit - and to distract us?
Posted by: mary at October 2, 2007 10:56 PMWell, you know, fabricating news and punishing people who break the law is the sa... wait, that isn't the same at all, is it?
Posted by: Eric at October 3, 2007 01:33 PMNo, Eric, but throwing shit around, as Mary put it, to distract attention from the stuff you do wrong should be criminal. Kidnapping a guy from another country, also illegal, building nuclear weapons - well that's a gray one inasmuchas if you have them it's too late, and if you are Israel it seems to be ok.
Posted by: bryan at October 3, 2007 01:46 PMOh, and if an Israeli official said it does that make it true? I'm probably an anti-semite just for thinking this is some sort of smokescreen.
PS To be honest, I do think a lot of 'news' that comes out of this area is stage-managed, fake and over-egged, but it isn't all from one side either. I also think that Hamas, for example, know exactly what the reaction will be when they launch rocket attacks and milk sympathy better than the best press officers in Hollywood.
No one's calling you an anti-semite, bryan. Now, under Israel's law, what Vanunu did was considered a matter of national security. You make it seem like he was kidnapped and thrown into a hole for 18 years. He was put on trial and convicted of treason, remember. He was put in solitary confinement because of the danger he could reveal further secrets. Not only had he broken his oath of secrecy required at the plant, he employed several tricks to violate the order against his speaking to the media.
I'm not sure what you mean by "from another country." Vanunu was (still is?) an Israeli citizen. He was in Rome when the Mossad nabbed him. Lured, yes, but he went there on his own volition.
