Listen
This is from the show I mentioned a few days ago, a clip of my friend Armen Ra performing on the theremin:
I'm filming this on my little camera so it's not the best quality, but still pretty cool. A better vid of Armen is here.

How is it that this instrument doesn't actually have to be touched to play? Looks like he's faking -- especially his right hand.
Also, are you sure this isn't a clip from some unreleased David Lynch movie?
Also, in your last post you said this is the only instrument invented in the 20th century. Liar! I'd guess thousands were invented, even if some were a bit random. I know the band Sex Mob invented the "slide trumpet" -- a cross between a trumpet and a trombone. Using turntables as instruments happened in the 20th century. And of course I invented the hamsterphone, a box of hamsters that a musician will tickle in such a way as to produce squeals of varying tones and volumes. Come to think of it, a theremin, slide trumpet, turntable and hamsterphone would make for a pretty bad ass indie rock band.
Posted by: FunkyPundit at October 26, 2007 07:40 PMAfter you mentioning the Theremin, I became fascinated with such an instrument. I don't play anything but if I were to start, I would take that up. Perhaps they have headphone versions for apartments.
Posted by: StuLongIsland at October 26, 2007 10:18 PMOh come on Stu, I'm sure you've played the Air guitar before as well. This just takes it to a whole different level of ether though. I knew I recognized the sound from movies like Ed Wood, I had never seen anyone actually play it before. I think the performer is as eerie as the music though, being so immersed in the performance. Is your friend an alien? Just amazing what one can do with two oscillators and some very dexterous hands..
Posted by: Oren at October 27, 2007 02:21 AMFunky, when I first heard about the theremin I heard of it as the only instrument invented last century. Maybe there are some parameters to that, but I don't know them.
Stu, you should learn and have concerts on Long Beach boardwalk.
My friend is not an alien but after his show I heard him have this exchange with someone buying his cd:
Him: "Do you want me to sign it?"
Buyer: "Yes! Definitely!"
Him: "Ok. Because I might die soon and it might be worth something."
Buyer: "Don't say that"
Him: "Oh honey, I'm just kidding, I'm already dead."
:-)
Hi Oren! Welcome to commenting on my blog. ;-)
Posted by: Karol at October 27, 2007 03:47 AMBy the by, Armen is also going to be in a 10-minute short for Halloween on the IFC channel with the chick from Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black. It starts airing Saturday.

Karol, sure will you come to the Long Beach concert and play tambourine while I play? ;) LOL, we can be Right Side Up
