I can't believe we let that country acquire nuclear weapons.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at November 6, 2007 08:49 AMAt the time, it was believed they were the counterbalance to Soviet influence in India. They were also a fairly staunch ally (allegedly).
Now, I _still_ don't understand why they were given an option on 12 September. But, hey, I've been beating the "kill the monster when it's a hatchling" drum for awhile.

Their acquisition of nuclear weapons came during the Clinton administration -- there was no more Soviet Union.
Posted by: Joe Grossberg at November 6, 2007 10:27 PMPakistan has had the atomic bomb since 1987 (conservativel). This was during the height of the Cold War and there's evidence that, as long as they didn't make it overt, the United States wouldn't start too hard of sanctions.
It was only in the late 90s that they started a testing regime and confirmed that they indeed had thermonuclear weapons.

You can't be the President and the head of the military at the same time.
I'm struggling to figure out why we should let you people pick another president.
Posted by: David at November 13, 2007 02:41 PMWho exactly are "you people" that you will "let" pick another president?
Posted by: Karol at November 13, 2007 02:42 PMYou people who find a way to support someone who doesn't have a fundamental grasp of The Constitution.
Posted by: David at November 13, 2007 09:06 PMI'm not so sure America does have a right to tell people how to arm themselves. However, I _am_ sure that America does have a right to defend itself--and I think right about now I'd be dusting off the "first strike" plans in order to keep Pakistan's nukes from going to terrorists.
You want to be a nuclear power--fine. However, don't start crying when, rather than waiting for your government to change, you pass some bright red line of instability and wake to a day with multiple suns.
