Worst. Governor. Ever.
Embattled governor Eliot Spitzer has scrapped his dumbass plan to give drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. But, not content with having no dumbass plans on the frontburner, Spitzer has come up with a novel way to tax New Yorkers. Shop online with no tax? Not anymore, the guv has found a loophole to take your money.

Day One. Everything changes.
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at November 14, 2007 01:25 PMPart of me is sad to see Spitzer cave on this issue; it lets Hillary off of the immigration hook, so to speak. The ideal scenario would have been Spitzer continuing to fight for his lame-assed and suicidal license proposal. This would have continued the pressure on Clinton, and as we all know, she chokes like a long-haired cat spewing up a hairball whenever pressure is applied.
Posted by: rob at November 14, 2007 01:28 PMTechnically, you're already on the hook for sales taxes on out-of-state and Internet purchases. You're supposed to "voluntarily" report all out-of-state purchases on your state income tax return and pony up the appropriate tax. Of course, nobody does it. The Pataki administration occasionally sent tax spies to the Ikea in Elizabeth, NJ, to write down NY license plates in the parking lot, so the shoppers could be sent a tax bill.
Posted by: Jim Lesczynski at November 14, 2007 02:45 PMThis isn't the end of the license story. Republican Jim Sensenbrenner is opposing changes to the Real ID Act to permanently stop all states awarding licenses to illegal aliens.
Posted by: forlorn apple at November 14, 2007 03:18 PMIn 1993 the Governor of Kansas, Joan Finney had an approval rating of around 3%. She was on vacation while the severe rainstorms of 1993 put the state mostly underwater.

Posted by: brent j. at November 14, 2007 05:41 PMFirst, many lawyers think that Spitzer's legal theory supporting the new tax is tenuous, at best. Second, it becomes more apparent daily that Spitzer's talents are prosecutorial, not executive. Many liberals, especially those who are puppypaper'porters, simply do not see the difference.

Fuck you, Spitz the Ditz. And let me add, you're not just a goddamn idiot, but a laughable megalomaniac. Even if you could go after every transaction, via affiliate or not, there are ways for anyone to avoid paying sales tax, and there's no way you can stop it.
Wow, I suddenly remembered bits and pieces of a very, Very Strange Dream a while back. Friends and I were mad about having to pay sales tax on my wedding or something.
