The more things change...
My family's way of saying "things could always be worse" was saying, "We could always be in Russia."
Matthue, another very cool person I met at that Jewcy party, has the story, at the link above, of Russian police shutting down a yeshiva and throwing everyone in jail overnight. Wait, what year is this?
(Sidenote: Matthue has written several books, one recently called "Candy in Action", check them out here.

I think, at the end of the day, that it might be time to write Russia off. Harsh, I know--but it seems like they tried democracy, it didn't take, and the cynical part of me says, "Hey, at least with Vlad you know the nukes aren't getting sold for a bottle of vodka."
Posted by: James at November 17, 2007 01:04 AMnot really the same thing, but my parents told me when i was little that if i was bad i'd have to go live in cleavland with all the other bad people.
Posted by: brent j. at November 17, 2007 01:21 AMOoh, I like that saying.
I know someone from Canada whose grandparents were exiles from Russia. He decided to move to Moscow as an adult; I think it took a year, or less, for him to want to fly across the Karelian Isthmus.
They treat non-Russian immigrants like crap, not that being a native-born Russian and living there is easy. I would imagine that unless you're one of the noveau riche or know one of the political cronies connected to Gazprom or one of the nationalized media outlets your life is pretty sucky.
Did the bochurim register properly with the authorities upon their arrival?

Posted by: GfCancio at November 18, 2007 03:21 AMMy sister works all over the former eastern bloc and she has to have an armed guard with her for the St. Petersburg stays.
Everyone who has read my posts knows of my disenchantment with W, but I will say he always seems to bring up topics which 'embarrass' Putin when they meet, and this is to his credit.
