In NYC

I want to go see a documentary about Yiddish theater in the East Village. Anyone else? Watch the preview before you all tell me "no".

Yes, I've heard about this recently.

It looks and sounds very interesting.

In Reiner Stach's biography of Frank Kafka there's a description of an event that Max Brod organized-and which Kafka emceed-where a traveling troupe of Jewish artists from within the Pale of Settlement agreed to perform in Prague. The cosmopolitan, Zionist, assimilated to Austrian culture audience invited by Brod were horrified by the strange accents, customs-not to mention, chaotic performance-of the visitors. The rest of the chapter deals with the schism between orthodox, Yiddish-speaking Jewish exiles and successful Jewish philanthropists who thought that they would be able to integrate their wayward cousins into the fabric of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

You should go, if only because it seems better than the usual fare.
