Vegas recap

I was in Las Vegas over the weekend for a very fun poker blogger gathering. The following not-so-random thoughts are not poker-related, though poker bloggers are linked and mentioned, so I figured I'd post them here instead of over at I Had Outs.

**I won $20 (off Iggy) and a breakfast (off Dutch) in two separate games of Roshambo (Rock, Paper, Scissors).

**I placed my first sportsbook bet (Ricky Hatton to win) and then my second sportsbook bet (Pittsburgh to cover against NE) and lost them both. I also placed a $20 bet on the Cowboys to win the Superbowl.

**I ate the world's smallest pear. And also the world's largest fruit salad.

**I got carried away watching football on Sunday with other Dallas Cowboys fans like STB and Mary (as opposed to with a bunch of people rooting for whomever the other team happens to be like I do in NY) and almost bought a $55 Dallas Cowboys baseball hat with rhinestones before remembering I don't wear baseball hats. I may get a T.O. specific item to add to my collection.

**In other sports-related news, I agreed to become a Buffalo Sabres fan. Vinnay had heard my previous "get me a shirt, make me a fan" tale and has promised Sabre paraphernalia when next we meet.

**I thought I was going to argue politics with BG of the blog Verbosities but then we ended up agreeing on a whole bunch of stuff while getting our drink on at the Imperial Palace Geisha bar. On a sidenote, if Ron Paul isn't cultivating poker players for support, he should be. I heard a lot of Ron Paul love out there.

**Pauly is the man. He knows why.

**I think Dawn and I have ruined the life of an adorable twenty-something pre-med student. Mostly her, obviously. She found him in Atlantic City and now he's joining her in playing 18 hours of poker a day. Someone call his family.

**I finally went to Rao's, like we were supposed to last year, though, obviously, not the impossible-to-get-into one in East Harlem. It was very good. I also ate at B&B, Mario Batali's new restaurant at the Venetian and I loved it. Don't listed to Dawn, Batali is not a hack.

Poker players, sex workers, Ho Chi Minh enthusiasts, members of the hospitality industry, and people who believe George W. Bush and the Shabak blew up the WTC.

You can't say his coalition isn't diverse.

Well, we didn't agree on everything... I still think the only vestigial trait Neocons have from their supposedly "liberal" days is that they're willing to swallow a little state-run welfare, assuming they get to decide who's deserving of such, and all that stuff about communities deciding to teach ID in their classrooms makes perfect sense in a hypothetical world where people can easily pick up and move somewhere to join a majority/homogeneous community of their very own.

Still though, that was a great deal of fun. I'll have to find some time to get into the city again sometime soon.

About the Hatton fight, and I repeat myself: SUCK IT, LIMEYS!

I love those doltish soccer-loving yobs who were bragging about how many of their cretinous countrymen managed to fly all the way across the Atlantic to see their man get his arse beat, as if that demonstrated some sort of moral superiority.

Nope, it merely illustrated how delusional English boxing fans are, because they were the only ones who didn't realize Hatton, yet another overrated wannabe, would be crushed by the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet.

This, Team USA trampling its foes in basketball for the first time in ages, and America triumphant in beisbol against Fidel's best-yes, I realize they were essentially fifty year-old indentured servants-makes me pretty happy to be an American sports fan at the moment.

Suck it, gits!

Yeah, suck it.

As of this morning, the Sabres are last in their division. Hate to say this, but you missed the Buffalo bandwagon by one season.

Posted by: Shawn at December 11, 2007 10:45 AM

I told you to take Mayweather. I know nothing about boxing, but the way that line was moving, it had to be a lock.

Don't listen to the Sabre haters - yeah, we lost a couple of great players in the off-season, and it's taken a bunch of games to find ourselves this season, but we are 7-3 in our last ten, only a few points behind the conference and division leaders, and have played less games than everyone else in the division.

So you know K, the division rivals are Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Boston. There is a long time Boston rivalry that goes back many years, so that should fit well into your Boston hating Yankee fandom.

It's not me, our waiter said Batali was a hack, I just agreed. How come you didn't write about how I made you wobble and then beat you up in the room?

Oof-post before you bet on boxing.

In regard to Gerard's post: while you may have somewhat of a point as to Hatton's boisterious fans, the man himself is a polite, nice, humble guy and a very good and entertaining fighter in his own right, who rarely leaves anything in the ring. He tried his best, but he was no match for Mayweather. The result didn't really surprise anyone.

Mayweather is simply in a class by himself; he is untouchable. The best fighter of his generation, no doubt. He's also a dirty fighter, albeit one who's very, very good at it. His elbow work blunted Hatton's edge well before Floyd landed the hook that precipitated the end. Floyd's superlative talent and boxing ability makes his unethical tacticts even more galling, in my opinion, because they are so obviously not needed.

That said, the only fighter within a reasonable weight of Floyd that I would pick to beat him is Winky Wright. And Wright's moving up in weight. Cotto, at welter, and Pacuiao (at 135) would both be live 'dogs but Floyd beats either.

I didn't intend to slight Hatton's effort.

You have to admire the determination of someone who realizes he is vastly overmatched, yet soldiers on to the point of near-oblivion.

He reminds me of the Bayonne Bleeder in some respects.

However, Mayweather would have won this match under any circumstances. He fought Hatton on Hatton's terms and completely dismantled him.

The malcontents commenting in the aftermath that Joe Calzaghe would be the real test for Mayweather are living in a fantasy land.

It doesn't matter if they put up some Scottish light heavyweight with two necks, who's practiced by sparring with the Loch Ness Monster for the past five years. He's going to be defeated.

Batali may not be a hack, but I have it on good authority (though it may just be rumour) that he is a drunk. Supposedly, that's the reason for the new Iron Chef and the resultant competition.

Heh, you're probably right; Calzaghe is the goods, though. I'd call it an even-money fight. Of course, it would be pitting a natural junior welter who spent most of his career at jr. lightweight/lightweight against a natural super-middle who probably walks around at 190+. In other words, it wouldn't be a fair fight.

And Floyd would *probably* win, anyway.
