I'd rather run against Obama any day of the week. And twice on Saturdays.
Allahpundit on the Hillary loss:
A harder punch than we may realize yet. It’s been speculated that a big reason so much of the black vote stayed with Hillary thus far is because they didn’t think Obama could win. That fear is dead now, with South Carolina shaping up to be a proving ground.Posted by Karol at January 4, 2008 10:41 AM | TrackBack

Since race is being injected into this, what's the likelihood that the Latino population would vote against Obama primarily because of his race?

As fellow immigrants, and with him likely going against Huckabee, close to zero.

Huh? Fellow immigrants? Fellow to whom, Obama?
I cannot even imagine an immigrant population that would identify with Obama of the Kansas missionary-Kenyan absentee father-Hawiian raised-Harvard affirmative action-community activist backround.
Posted by: Jaibones at January 4, 2008 01:00 PMIt depends.
I had a sociology teacher in college who told a great anecdote about a Greek diner owner he knew who venerated Richard Nixon.
Not necessarily because of his political views, but because Nixon's personal biography demonstrated that you can achieve the pinnacle of success in this country, regardless of your humble origins.
I suppose some immigrants can ascribe the same persona to Obama, even though he came from an upwardly mobile, middle class background.
Posted by: Gerard at January 4, 2008 01:19 PMKarol,
Don't underestimate the value of Obama's charisma. He's got it in spades, whereas Hillary doesn't have any at all, and there are a lot of people out there who vote for the person who seems the most likable.
Posted by: Eric at January 4, 2008 01:20 PMI feel like forwarding this to the Hillary campaign. Obama: The Alarming News candidate of choice.
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at January 4, 2008 01:25 PMLikely going against Huckabee?
Come on people. Do you really, honestly think that Mike Huckabee is going to be the GOP candidate for President?
Get real, please.
Posted by: chaos at January 4, 2008 02:04 PMI'd much rather run against Hillary than Barack.
Barack is a sunny personality, whereas Hillary is shrill and not very likeable.
Keep in mind, there's a good percentage of the American electorate who are not ideological and merely tend to vote for the candidate they like more.
For example, Gore should have cleaned W's clock in 2000 (incumbent VP presiding over a good econonmy in peacetime), but Gore was a little too weird for a lot of voters.
He couldn't even win his own home state of Tennessee. He couldn't even win his own former Congressional district.
We want to run against the unlikeable Hillary.

Yeah, and Grandpa Fred's gonna rule.
Delusion reigns here.
Posted by: m2f at January 4, 2008 06:59 PMFace it, the truth is there are eleven months left to this pathetic little exercise in compromise, and none of you, not even the all-exalted Karol, can possibly anticipate the twists and turns that will unfold at this early point, much less are any of you qualified to make rational predictions regarding this election cycle's outcome this early.
What a short-sighted, egotistical, arrogant crew.
And I'm not just referring to the candidates...

Helping spreading the word, to save the world.
How does Romney, Mccain, Giuliani or Huckabee feel about this?

Actually, hashfanatic, I hate to interrupt another one of your bong hits, but there are only TEN months left to the campaign.
On the other hand, if you are planning to vote in December, that's probably better for the nation.

That's obvious. The guy who runs the Stars message board I frequent often says, "It's just one game so I'm not going to read too much into it."
Posted by: Shawn at January 5, 2008 03:22 PMBBIAS, if that's the best you can do, I guess you ain't so bad after all...

Sorry, with Hillary you have roughly 30-45% of the population that would sooner swallow shaved glass than vote for her. That's pretty powerful.
On the other hand, when Obama is on, he's on. He's got Bill's ability to move a crowd--and that's dangerous. Really dangerous. It's the reason that the phrase "cult of personality" was invented and, quite frankly, the lack of it is why Fred is not really gaining traction despite having some of the best proposals of the GOP side.
As far as the GOP side goes, if the GOP fields Huckabee and the winner of the Dem is anyone but Hillary, I think you might as well plan on a Dem president. Sorry, I just can't see the conservative movement getting behind him. Evangelicals, yes...but not all your other flavors of conservatives.
Posted by: James at January 5, 2008 10:11 PMThe fact that hardcore Democrats turned against Hillary! in the Iowa caucuses, but that she did well with independents, is a feature for Hillary!, not a bug.
She ain't dead folks. If the Republicans turn crazy-as-the-dems-who-went-for-Kerry-crazy and ominate Huck, and say hello to at least four more Clintonista years.
Posted by: Mark Poling at January 6, 2008 03:28 AMI'm not sure it's a feature--after all, it is the _Dem_ primary. Don't win the primaries, it doesn't matter if the indies love you unless you're wanting to go to the Ross "The 'Recker" Perot route and run as an indie yourself.
