Who didn't see that love affair ending?
John McCain vs. The New York Times.
Let's face it, if there was anything to this "John McCain had a thing with a chick lobbyist" story, the New York Times wouldn't be releasing it in February. It would be a late October/early November front pager. That's how they do.

Hmmmm....
The Keating Five
And now...Jet setting about with a lobbiest who wings him, dines with him and funds him while he oversees the telecommunications area she represents.
He would have been better off just bedding her.
One word: meh.
Posted by: Shawn at February 21, 2008 12:38 PMi think they might be playing a game of gotcha. like they have some specific information and are waiting for a denial so they can then present the evidence.
NYT: "not only is he unethical, but hes a filthy LIAR, too."
Posted by: its vintage duh at February 21, 2008 12:45 PMQuite the hit piece. A combination of unsourced, undocumented, rumors from 1999, along with a story more than 20 years old that, at worst, showed poor judgment on McCains part.
To endorse him a few weeks ago, yet run something they expect us to think is newsworthy now? How two-faced and shady is that?
"Lets try to get him the nomination, so we can run this 20 year old piece on him!"
Consider this conservative moved from "Meh, I'll vote for him, but that's all" to "McCain donor and supporter".
This will probably prove to be an incredible way to rally conservatives to his side.
The enemy of the New York Times is someone I can really get behind.

"McCain Loan Raises FEC Questions
WASHINGTON (AP) — The government's top campaign finance regulator says John McCain can't drop out of the primary election's public financing system until he answers questions about a loan he obtained to kickstart his once faltering presidential campaign.
Federal Election Commission Chairman David Mason, in a letter to McCain this week, said the all-but-certain Republican nominee needs to assure the commission that he did not use the promise of public money to help secure a $4 million line of credit he obtained in November.

Indeed, Peregrine.
More of the same (and most likely worse).
Posted by: hashfanatic at February 21, 2008 04:49 PMNo Osama Obama - I love my country more than I hate McCain!
Posted by: Radical Redneck at February 21, 2008 05:05 PMWell, it seems to me a lot of McCain's former "close friends" are going to turn out to be political beasts after all, and go for his throat at every opportunity from here on out.
Ah,the joys of being a committed bi-partisan. (Just ask Joe Lieberman.) (Not that I think real bi-partisanship is inherently bad. I just think that McCain's going to find out he didn't really buy a lot of good will, he just sort of rented it.)
