The Prestige, guys, really?
It's true Christian Bale can do little wrong, but The Prestige was not a great movie. It certainly wasn't better than The Illusionist, which might have its flaws, but doesn't have {SPOILER ALERT} a machine which duplicates man. A little far-fetched, no? My boyfriend, I mean, my Netflix partner, is threatening to cut me off from future movie choosing and I blame all of you.
Human Nature was pretty good, though. I enjoyed the humor in it and it was certainly different.
Up next is Straight Story.

Vincent Gallo fans have no vote. I love you darling, but you have taste in your toes!
Posted by: Ari at February 25, 2008 01:46 AMIC hated Prestige (I merely didn't like it) and he is no Vincent Gallo fan.
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 01:48 AMYes, but he likes you and you like Vincent.
Posted by: Ari at February 25, 2008 03:09 AMYou like me too!
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 03:34 AMCrap... that's true. And to some extent we both like Dawn. What does it all mean?!?!
Posted by: Ari at February 25, 2008 04:10 AMI hate Dawn.
And apparently no one wants to own up to loving Prestige now.
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 10:54 AMYou didn't like the whole psychological torture and Michael Caine's whole twist on the sailor story?
Posted by: Petitedov at February 25, 2008 10:59 AMKarol: thanks for settling this once and for all:
1. Karol doesn't like The Prestige.
2. Karol dislikes all good films.
3. Q.E.D., The Prestige is a good film.
Need I really point out that the lame, studio mandated, tacked-on, faux, "twist" ending to Illusionist doesn't get past the fact that it too is overtly fiction? You have a problem with the machine in Prestige, but not the apparitions roaming the theater in Illusionist?
What's the over/under that Karol likes a film by a great director like David Lynch? Is 8% overestimating the chances?
You really liked Prestige, Charlie, or are you just giving me shit? ;-)
I like Mulholland Drive and I LOVED Blue Velvet. But I hear Straight Story is different from all his other stuff so who knows.
You didn't like the whole psychological torture and Michael Caine's whole twist on the sailor story?
Eh, it was ok. Again, they needed a machine that duplicates people in order for the story to work. Illusionist might have some holes but they're not THAT big.
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 11:36 AMI meant to write that the ending in the Illusionist was HORRIBLE.
Posted by: Petitedov at February 25, 2008 11:58 AMOk, fine. I thought The Prestige was pretty good. Not great, but pretty good. Far fetched? Yes. But at least it wasn't as predictable as The Illusionist. It was very obvious to me where the Illusionist was going the whole time.
Here's a recommendation. Primer. It's a great low budget movie, and probably one of the best hard sci-fi movies I have seen in quite some time. I admit, it is a bit difficult to follow at times, so you really have to pay attention, but it is a fantastic movie.
My advice is to just get the movie Primer and watch it, don't look up what it is about, don't even read the slip cover, or you could spoil the "Bruce Willis is really a dead guy" moment. Like the Sixth Sense, it is a movie that is better to be surprised about.
If you end up not liking it, you should probably stick to movies like Titanic or Dirty Dancing.

OH SNAP. I've just never been accused of liking conventional movies. I tend to like weirder movies. Again, they also have to be GOOD.
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 12:18 PMthe prestige was lame. have you seen inland empire yet? tough to watch all in one sitting, but it blew me away. you should be my netflix friend! what email did you register with?

Seconded. You might be interested in the PDF cheatsheet floating around that keeps all the timelines straight.

You're not making it sound all that good, gotta tell you.
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 01:27 PMI keep meaning to recommend Equilibrium with Christian Bale. It has amazing gun sequences and the message of the movie is pretty kick-ass. I've been meaning to write a review of that movie. I don't know if you are a fan of Kieslowski, but Heaven with Cate Blanchett is pretty good (it's Kieslowski's script, directed by Tom Tkywer - of Run Lola Run fame)
Posted by: Petitedov at February 25, 2008 01:28 PMNoone said it wasn't sci-fi and it was believable.
Really?! No one told me that. I thought it was, like the Illusionist, a film about magicians that is ultimately about magic, not sci fi.
This guy literally has to murder himself every night to do what he does. And he's done it thousands of times."
Actually, he [not Bale, Hugh Jackman] only was doing 100 shows. I guess that's how much he felt he could stomach.
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 01:32 PMI've added those two, Petitedov, with the condition that I point IC in your direction if they are terrible.

The cheatsheet isn't a requirement. There's also a whole "power corrupts absolutely" thread running through the movie.

HAHAHAH I don't know how I missed this post. But what Charlie said. Karol has crap taste in movies. The Prestige was awesome! The twist end was deeeelicious! Viva the machine!
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at February 25, 2008 02:25 PMI dont even know where to begin, it just wasn't a good movie. The plot was difficult to follow. I didn't care about either character - the protagonist killed a guy's wife and all he could offer up was "I don't remember how i tied the knot". Guess f**kin what, that answer ain't good enough.
I didn't really care why they were reading each other's diaries. And if a major theme of this movie is the extremes to which people will go to succeed/excel, this was a poor, and at times convoluted vehicle, for that message.
I haven't even touched Scarlett Johanson's character who with little development was tossed into the enemy's camp and decided screw it, if i'm being asked to do this, i'll just side with the enemy.
And I really won't touch the whole two guys living as Bale. As if neither the wife, the kid or Johanson's character would ever realize that on some nights one guy comes home and on other nights, a different dude. And if your response will is "It's just a movie, play along", then please identify yourself now so I know what to expect that next time you recommend a movie. I mean....HONESTLY.
you should be my netflix friend! what email did you register with?
I believe you can add me at this link: http://www.netflix.com/BeMyFriend/P7iiVbcMryQNX7tProUL
Posted by: Karol at February 25, 2008 02:50 PMHe didn't know what kind knot he tied because it wasn't him! It was his brother! Also the whole sailor story twist was horrible. Hugh Jackman's character thought he was dying every night in a blissful manner, while in fact he was in agony.
Karol - I saw Equilibrium recently, Heaven a while ago, I willing to vouch for the first one but not the second.
Posted by: Petitedov at February 25, 2008 05:03 PMI was one of the people that said the Illusionist was better than The Prestige. Glad you agree Karol.
Equilibrium is a cool movie. But you have to like sci-fi movies mixed with martial arts like the Matrix or you might not like it.
