Not-so-random thought
For the last 7+ years, whenever a Democrat has wanted to show they were not a rabid partisan, they'd tell me that John McCain was a Republican they admired, a Republican they could support. If only, they'd continue, John McCain and not that awful George W. Bush, had won in 2000, why, we'd not only not be in "this" mess, but said Democrat might even have supported him in 2004. John McCain was a great American, and a great Senator. Heck, they'd say thinking it would never happen, I'd be honored to have him be our president. I'd roll my eyes so hard and tell them McCain was my last choice. They'd scoff that I'm just an intolerant rightwinger who didn't know that the best man in my party is John McCain.
Of course, now that John McCain is officially the Republican nominee, he's the second coming of George W. Bush, and count on him to become even worse as voting day draws near.

The John McCain of 2000 is gone, never to be seen again. At 72, the oldest to ever run for office, he has and will continue to pander to the worst of the right wing ideologues.
I am a rapid partisan. McCain, does now, and always has sucked donkey brains.

Of course, he didn't do himself any favors by vociferously backing the war in Iraq and hedging on what constituted torture. He earned a lot of the contempt that Dems previously directed at Bush by changing tack and aligning himself with Bush.
