Not as catchy as O-ba-ma
The new McCain ad, "Man in the Arena", is very good.
I would cut out the parts of him smiling and lose the little girl in the field at the end. It's just too much imagery for one ad. And the man in the arena isn't smiling. He's growling, he's defending us, he'll never surrender, never. He doesn't have time for grinning.

Yeah, the girl and the grinning are a bit much. He should work on his delivery a bit too. It isn't even close to electrifying yet, even if more authentic than Obama. Calling back to Churchill and Teddy Roosevelt is good though, and he ought to add in Reagan also.
Still bothers me that he's the standard bearer alternative to Clinton/Obama. So I better be seeing the ads speaking convincingly about a good tax plan, recognizing the need to at least revise some elements of campaign finance reform, and hammering away at earmarks as a symbol of his commitment to tame federal overspending. Sitting the election out is not an option, but he won't win with nothing more than reluctant, had to drag ourselves to the voting booth, entirely lukewarm support.
Posted by: kende at March 7, 2008 01:46 PMIt is a good ad, and I like the old footage of Churchill and Roosevelt, but I wonder if it's just going to call attention to the age issue. I suspect that there are also going to be a lot of younger voters who don't recognize Churchill and Roosevelt or understand the historical context.

Posted by: Richard in NY at March 7, 2008 02:07 PMI hope no one got paid for that. That was positively cheesy. Firstly, it's too long by, oh, I don't know, a minute and a half. If this is meant to be an ad, it shouldn't run over a minute. I don't care if the web has no restrictions on time and space; the viewer's attention does. Secondly, one of the reasons it's too long is that utterly ridiculous cosmos filler. Did someone have some spare Star Trek filler hanging around? I like putting him next to Theodore Roosevelt and Churchill, but I have to admit that Churchill's voice doesn't sound particularly impressive. Sounds like Matthew Modine with some cotton shoves in his mouth. Perhaps they can pay James Earl Jones to read the lines.
And Karol's right. The smiling and the girls in the field (probably some too-clever-by-half nod to LBJ's "Daisy" ad that no one is going to get anyway) are useless and don't fit with the overall tone. Why not just chuck a kitten in there, too?
Posted by: Ken at March 7, 2008 04:53 PMDude that was the worst ad I have ever seen...what is he running for...British Prime Minister circa 1942? Okay...give it to him. I'm in. Let McCain be Prime Minister 60 years ago.
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at March 7, 2008 05:11 PMIt feels more like a movie trailer than a political ad.
And what's with the shots of nebulae?
Posted by: Shawn at March 7, 2008 10:31 PMOh oh, how much did that ad cost?...looks like it was made by some fan posting a video on youtube...how else to explain the nebula shots, the strange and quirky editing. oh well, GOP is finished for many years to come in both whitehouse and congress anyways. might as well not spend too much going through the motions.
