If Bear Stearns has screwed up this week, why save them so they can do it again in the future? Surely letting them go under would help the economy in the longer term.

That is, after all, reflected in the interest rate.
Either way "the people" are going to pay for the mess... you can either have "the people" be the ones who actually made the bad bets and have them pay in proportion to their investments, or "the people" be every tax payer and have them pay in proportion to their taxable income, from whatever the source. I don't see how the 2nd alternative is fairer at all.
Capitalism would be nice to try.
