Help me sleep

One of the best pieces of advice I've ever gotten is "wear comfortable shoes and have a comfortable bed, because if you're not in one, you're in the other."

I've taken this completely to heart and it's rare that you'll see me tottering in uncomfortable shoes like so many women do. I don't care how smoking the shoe, if you can't walk in it it's not that hot.

But this post isn't about the shoes part of that statement, it's about the bed part. My bed is killing me. I need a new one. I need some advice and since I have the most brilliant, knowledgeable, awesome readers ever, I figured I'd ask you all.

Tell me about your mattress and how much you love it, and what it's called and where I can buy it.

Um, shouldn't you tell people what size you're looking for? I mean, if a Middle Eastern sultan reads this website, I don't think you're going to able to afford his digs. ("Ah yes, and then I have the harem line up from A to Zed. I'm usually out by the time we get through the Bs...")

Haha, nah, size doesn't matter. It's going to be a king-size bed anyway. It should be on the firmer side, that's pretty much my only requirement.

Mrs Jake, like you, is very fussy about mattresses. The only one she likes is the Tempur-Pedic. I think we have the one that is one step down from their firmest. But you should try all of them before you buy.

I've just had treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apneoa, but now I'm sleeping deeper and better than ever, I'm needing a better bed too. I'm getting something pocket-sprung; individual springs (the more per square foot the better), each in its' own little pocket. Not too firm either, I'm might as well sleep on the floor if I want that firmness!

Memory foam, for sure. You can, incidentally, increase the subjective "firm" feeling by adding another light cover to the mattress so it reacts more slowly and lightly to your body heat.

If Tempur-Pedic prices make your eyes bleed, there are alternatives (good one here). Remember you basically want the densest foam possible (> 5lb.) though -- it lasts longer, and makes it feel firmer.

Either memory foam or one of the new air matresses (e.g., SelectComfort, etc.). BTW, if you have a bad back, opt for a softer mattress, not a firm one. A soft mattress will be in contact with more of your body, therefore reducing the weight supported by any one contact point. A waterbed would also work, but it is not an option in most NYC buildings. Good luck.

Waterbed. I saw it on House, Wilson loved it.
