Song of the Day

"Just the two of us" by Bill Withers.

I love everything by Withers, everything, but this is one of the songs I may have under-appreciated. IC woke me up with it a few days ago and it's been in my head ever since. A simple, beautiful song. Especially worth a listen if all you've ever heard is the Will Smith version (which, actually, I'm only a little ashamed to admit I think is sort of adorable).

"Use me" is a great track too.
Old joke: How do you turn a duck into a soul singer? A: Put him in the microwave till his bill withers.
(much funnier when you're a kid).

what person had a microwave as a kid and knew who bill withers was?

funnily enough, that was where that joke fell down for most people who weren't brought up with a great deal of soul sounds like we (me and mine) were. Well spotted ;~)

i grew up listening to bill and i remember when we got our first microwave, i was in second or third grade and the first thing i did was put a pot in it to boil water. i thought the sparks were awesome but my mom did not. my little brother somehow already knew you weren't supposed to put metal in the microwave and laughed at me.

anyway, i probably would have thought that joke was funny back then.

Our first microwave was about 1984, and within a week we had
1) realised it doesn't toast bread, but dries it out a treat.
2) blows up eggs
3) blows up tomatoes.

Happy days!
