Song of the Day
"High Hopes" by Pink Floyd.
Everyone knows that a Pink Floyd without Roger Waters is hardly a Pink Floyd at all (yes, I know the hippest among us would say a Pink Floyd without Syd Barrett is hardly a Pink Floyd at all but as all their most famous work was released after the Barrett breakdown that's just unreasonable.) I don't even own Momentary Lapse of Reason and I didn't love Division Bell though I did ultimately buy it, for this song and this song only (this, kids, was in the days when you had to buy all the crappy songs a band produced to get the one you like. It was a horrible time. You're lucky to not remember it.)
A lot of Pink Floyd songs strike me as sort of nostalgic for better times, and High Hopes is chief among those. A kid commented on the youtube page for this video "it makes me sad how f*ckd up the world is today... im only thirteen and i love pink floyd and this video makes me wonder what the better times were like." Of course, the whole idea of the song isn't about our collective past, but our individual ones, when the lights were brighter and friends surrounded. The thirteen year old just doesn't know yet that he has it made. Perhaps he should be listening to The Wall or Animals.

But he's got hiiigh hopes!
He's got hiiiigh...
Oh, wait, wrong High Hopes.
Actually I had to google this song just now because I never heard of it and I thought I was fairly familiar with the Pink Floyd catalog. Turns out there was a Pink Floyd album in the 90s! Who knew?

Posted by: James at May 14, 2008 10:21 PMOh, teenagers will always love "The Wall". Continuing the "Mean People Suck" theme started with "Animals", "The Wall" explores all the people who are at fault for Pink's problems:
- His father died in the war
- His mother is over-protective
- His teachers are authoritarian, and don't understand he is an artist (the laddie fancies himself a poet!)
- His wife cheats on him
- His fans are too fanatical
- His tour doctor drugged him, just to get him on stage
I think I like the Nightwish version better.
Can't say I've heard that one.

Well, I posted a link to the YouTube, Shawn, but I'm not sure where the comment went.
