Damn methodists.

Those Southern Baptists, always causing trouble.

In other news, two thugs were caught on video tying a man to a post and beating him. You're never going to guess which religion is involved:

I'm baffled that you think there's a comparison to be made here. Did they beat him because he was Palestinian or Muslim? No, they beat him because they thought he was burning their fields. Don't get me wrong, punish them to the full extent of the law, but don't compare it to a man killing his daughter because she violated the family's honor.

Posted by: Karol at July 8, 2008 01:13 PM

You're joking, right? Their entire bogus claim to "their fields" is based on their religion.

Posted by: Jim Lesczynski at July 8, 2008 01:27 PM

Only in the same way someone can burn down your apartment and then say you had no claim because the land was stolen from the Native Americans.

Jim... you're against painting an entire religion with a brush dipped in the deeds of a minority of its practitioners?

You welfare-taking, government-run-school-supporting, trans-fat-banning, gun-grabbing liberals make me sick.

My apartment is built on landfill on the East River. :-)

Fun fact: the reason it was caught on tape was because Israeli human rights groups gave Palestinian bystanders the video cameras to catch human rights abuses. And an Israeli soldier halted the incident. And settler leaders have criticized the incident. You could guess the religion involved, but that BBC article doesn't mention it.

Posted by: Nikhil at July 8, 2008 01:58 PM

E5, there are other religions in which members commit horrible acts like the Jews did to the Palestinian. But there aren't other religions that frequently have "honor" killings which are glossed over by the majority of the religion's followers. This happened in America! Not in Saudi Arabia. I'm not going to worry about insulting Islam in my pointing out that this is horrific and unacceptable.

Posted by: Karol at July 8, 2008 02:18 PM

I said nothing about any religion in specific... Jewish, Islam or other.

I am merely mocking the process of defining an entire population based on a minority of it's members.

I love how the BBC waits until the third paragraph to mention the burning fields in a not-too-accusatory kind of way.

Jim, Did you also fall for the BBC's headline 'Israel bulldozer driver shot dead' in the aftermath of the Palestinian bulldozer rampage, like there was absolutely no reason he should have been killed?

Posted by: pn at July 8, 2008 02:30 PM

Lost in the aftermath is whether the Palestinian is in fact guilty of burning the fields. If he is, then I don't feel the least bit sorry he was beaten.

Maybe if more of these Palestinian thugs were deservedly beaten within an inch of their worthless lives, instead of being caught and released in "prisoner exchanges," they'd learn that you don't start a war and expect to keep your land if you lose.

This honour killing system is terrible. Anyone who interprets it that their religion (whatever that may be) allows them to commit such a terrible act is dangerous, and so is the person or persons who teach same. I worry that there are some christian groups in the world setting themselves up for this sort of thing in the future if they're not careful or get taken over by zealots.

Posted by: bryan at July 8, 2008 03:36 PM

It may not have been premeditated. But still in a religion and culture in which men can become so angry at their daughters or husbands for these so called dis-honers that they murder these women. It's sick. premeditated or not the religion and culture these people follow is messed up.

Posted by: PAUL at July 8, 2008 05:48 PM

I'm sure, bryan. I mean, after hundreds of years, those Amish are on the verge of starting honor killings. Heaven forbid a daughter should marry outside the community!

And a lot of my fellow Southern Baptists would stone me if they found out I besmirched the denomination by occasionally drinking alcohol, right?

Sarcasm aside, you may try to predict the future about Christianity, but the fact is that Muslim culture from Africa to India has sanctioned "honor killings" for centuries. Now Muslims are doing it here in the United States. Yaser Said is still on the loose.

Perry, (sigh). "Some", but not the ones you mentioned, ok? Also not especially focussing on the USA in what I said.

Posted by: bryan at July 9, 2008 04:35 PM

OK, so who? Coptics? Or maybe those Azerbajiani Orthodox? Are Irish Catholic fathers starting to murder their daughters for daring to marry a Protestant?

Give examples to back up your assertion. Don't just make general slander.
