That's 2 minutes of my life I'll never get back
It has a sexy title, "Is marriage for white people?", but this article (part of CNN's "Black in America" series) bemoaning being a well-educated and still single woman, could have so easily been written by, well, a white person. In fact, this article is often written by white women. The "yes there have been some men who wanted commitment and I didn't" part. The "I may have been focusing on other things like traveling the world" part. The "will I ever meet him" part. What part of that is exclusive to race? And therein lies the problem with the CNN series. Being black in America is most similar to being white in America, as opposed to being, say, black in Africa or Asia or Europe. I guess that wouldn't make for sensationalized programming.

Indeed. And the true root of the problem according to CNN, of course, is that we
just.
don't
talk.
enough.
about.
race.
in.
America.
Yes, exactly. We should talk about it more. That will definitely help bridge all divides. Until the next race special they decide to run, anyway.
Posted by: Karol at July 24, 2008 12:57 PMEnh, we do need to talk about it more--it's just that no one wants to actually hear what's being said.
Posted by: James at July 25, 2008 12:20 AMSorry, I respectfully disagree.
This country does nothing BUT harang, e-n-d-l-e-s-s-l-y about race. Over & over & again & again.
You're right that no one wants to, or can hear, whats being said. Frankly, I'm deaf to all of it because there's only one 'approved' conclusion from the very beginning.

Sorry, let me amend my statement--no one wants to hear what _needs_ to be said. Instead, we get snake oil salesman like Jesse and Al jumping in front of cameras calling people racists whenever things start cutting close to home.

Posted by: Snoop Diggity-DANG-Dawg at July 25, 2008 09:39 AMThank you for commenting on this article and the ridiculous series that CNN is doing. How about more articles about the similarities between blacks in America and non-blacks? Instead of talking about how people of different races are such polar opposites, and consequently how that is somehow my fault or that I am contributing to it, it would be nice to see some discussion of the fact that we are all Americans and are all afforded such great opportunities that nobody else in the world isgiven. Excuses do nothing but legitimize mediocrity.
By the way, marriage isn't for everybody...
