Where are the Edwards defenders?
Kathryn Jean Lopez (via Hot Air):
The reaction of the American Left to John Edwards’s sex scandal is nothing short of flabbergasting. Since when is sex outside of marriage a disqualifier for merely speaking at a political convention? Since when is having sexual relations with that woman in your office anything wrong? Since when do we judge? The difference here seems to be that Elizabeth Edwards has cancer. So only fatal disease makes the bonds of marriage sacred?
I was thinking recently how after the Spitzer fiasco there were a few articles by men saying "well, it's hard to have sex with just one person forever, I can relate to Eliot Spitzer" and yet no one is coming out and saying they are like John Edwards. I guess cheating on your dying wife and denying your obvious child are things we just don't accept in our society. And sanks G-d for that.

I'm not sure the act of cheating on one's dying wife is what's so sickening.
IMHO his dispicable factor hit the douchebag-O'-shere in his nauseating, lawyerly parsing of "99% truth".
I.e. the claim that when the affair began his wife's cancer was in remission, as though THAT is in some way a redeeming quality. Then bizarrely trying to deny paternity, as though it would refect positively upon him, if in fact it wasn't HIS specific sperm cell that impregnated her.
What a great guy! John Edwards has never cared about anyone in the world except for John Edwards.
His wife & his children are painfully aware of what a pathological liar he is. And man, that's gotta sting.

Posted by: Casca at August 14, 2008 04:00 PMI'm not sure that Elizabeth Edwards' cancer is the only difference. John Edwards' cheating was exposed so close to the convention and the story is still in the news. Also, the Democrats need to judge Edwards so that they can dredge up and judge McCain's divorce, etc. Thus no speech by Edwards at the convention.
Posted by: K. at August 14, 2008 04:12 PMThe thing that gets me about Edwards is the sheer gall of the man. Everything he's said so far has been a lie, and he keeps piling on more expecting people to believe. He really thinks the public is stupid. Well, they are, but they're not that stupid.
Posted by: Eric at August 14, 2008 04:28 PMI think that it has, unfortunately [very, very unfortunately!], become less of an outrage, in the public mind, due to the situation with Slick Willie.
It makes me extremely frustrated, hearing so many people criticizing President Bush (which I myself have a record of doing) but while also asserting or implying that this administration's actions are worse than those of the last administration.
While the Bush administration has been extremely problematic, the Clinton administration was inherently corrupt - and criminal - the deceit, deception, and scandal of those years was far, far, far greater than anything that has arisen, during the current presidency. Despite this administration's policies and actions being wrong, the honesty, candor, and straightforwardness of this President is admirable, especially when compared to the last one. (And it's safe to assume that his final days in office will be very different from those of the last president, as well!)
I wish that people had longer attention spans - but especially, longer memories.
