Bob Herbert should be fired
In a piece about how liberals like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama reject the "liberal" label, Bob Herbert concludes:
"Self-hatred is a terrible thing. Just ask that arch-conservative Clarence Thomas."
In what way does Clarence Thomas "self-hate"? Or, is being a conservative just unacceptable for a black man? Why, he must follow the empty-headed Bob Herberts of the world right off the "government will take care of you" cliff! Who is allowed to be a conservative anyway? Am I self-hating because I'm a Jewish, immigrant, female conservative? What opinions should I hold that might be acceptable to straight morons like Herbert? Please, enlighten me to what my correct thinking must be. And I better not deviate from it, lest some hack find me self-hating.

He self-hates because he rejects the label arch-conservative, when his actions and opinions are manifestly so.

Bob Herbert's response: "Well, duh!"
Posted by: Mark Poling at September 9, 2008 03:21 PMThat boy should be lynched.
Oh, I'm sorry, was that not "acceptable" to Herbert?
Well, tough. His idiocy has never been acceptable to me, and this latest trash takes the cake.
Posted by: Perry Eidelbus at September 9, 2008 04:08 PMBob Herbert, the most knowledgeable of the Liberal press, coupled with Ted Rall, no wonder the Dems love them so much.
People like Clarence Thomas who stand up for themselves are WEAK because they don't suck at the teat of the government.
Posted by: Original Pechanga at September 9, 2008 05:50 PMOne thing for sure... Herbert is an angry little man. Not a happy bone in his body. Speaking of bones...he likely needs to get laid

Just curious, do Justices Stevens and Ginsburg label themselves arch-liberals? If not, aren't they "self-haters" according to your "logic"?
Posted by: buzz at September 9, 2008 05:53 PMBrilliant post! Short, smart and to the point. Herbert is a giant phallic symbol if you ask me. Keep up the good work!

Awww, Buzz, I read that on my blackberry and had the same comment just as soon as I got back to a computer.
Posted by: Karol at September 9, 2008 05:55 PMFired? I thought he was their resident expert on phallic symbols as they related to black politicans.
Posted by: GarandFan at September 9, 2008 06:00 PMLeft-wing Jews are the self haters, People who want to appease our enemies , consciously or out of stupidity, to our own demise, can't really like themselves or their co-religionists. Giving away parts of Israel or freeing Palestinians murders or backing people for President supported heavily by anti-Semitic black leaders (Sharpton, Jackson, Farrakhan). They feel guilty and miserable being who they are. Thinking to themselves, we do the world wrong and their own people are bad or evil.
GF,
Hey, times are tough; he's gotta be the WaPo's go-to guy on *something*...
Posted by: PSGInfinity at September 9, 2008 06:28 PMCall me crazy but I never worry so much about self-haters as I do about other-haters...they just seem to make more mischief and bring more misery. Herbert seems, sadly, like a really maliciouosly vicious other-hater. Why he added the out of place zinger about Clarence Thomas in an otherwise decent toned article makes me wonder about Herbert's mental health.
Posted by: marybel at September 9, 2008 06:57 PMBob Herbert is definitely a racist. He owes the German people an apology for saying their Victory Column looks like a man's penis. (phallic symbol)

Also, David, I'm pretty sure Herbert didn't mean he hates himself in his denial of his conservatism. He meant he's a self-hating black man for being a conservative.
Posted by: Karol at September 9, 2008 07:22 PMAll of my best lines have already been taken.
Phooey.
Posted by: Christopher Calandro at September 9, 2008 07:24 PMread thomas' book. there's plenty of self-hatred in his auto-biography. I believe that's what herbert's editorial is referring to. All of the racial comments- especially the more offensive ones are completely ignorant and irrelevant to the Herbert article.

Quite possibly. I was merely commenting on the logic the Mr. Herbert was using. I wasn't commenting on the content of his message.
I got a good laugh out of you writing "logic" .
He meant he's a self-hating black man for being a conservative.
If that's really the message he is sending, he is doing it badly. It's a logical non sequitur. That kind of prattle that just adds to the noise [and drowns out any meaningful message].
By the by, his use of 'arch-conservative' shows a lack of lexical refinement. Using that term is like using 'always' and 'never'.
