If Obama loses it's because you all are a bunch of racists
Four days earlier, James Carville, longtime Clinton campaign confidant and Democratic Party operative, made similar inflammatory remarks as part of a panel during the Oct. 7 edition of CNN show "Anderson Cooper 360º," which analyzed last week's debate between Sens. McCain and Obama.Host Anderson Cooper asked panelist David Gergen if the 14-point lead Sen. Obama had, in the current CNN poll, were maintained, would the election essentially be over?
Mr. Gergen responded that predicting a Sen. Obama landslide is premature because Sen. Obama is black.
"I think it's too early to declare victory Anderson, because Barack Obama is black," Mr. Gergen said. "And until we play out the issue of race in this country, I don't think we'll know."
He then cited a joint study by Stanford University, the Associated Press and Yahoo, which states that being black might cost a candidate as much as six percentage points in an election. The fact he won the two debates, in his opinion, was irrelevant.
Mr. Carville continued the theme of race by insinuating that there could be dire results if Sen. Obama is not elected.
"Now let me be clear here, if Obama goes in this race with a five-point lead and losing this election, the consequences are - bull, man. I mean I don't think that's going to happen, but I think David it's a point to bring up," Mr. Carville said. "But you stop and contemplate this country if Obama goes in and he has a consistent five-point lead and loses the election, it would be very, very, very dramatic out there."
Paul Begala, Mr. Carville's partner in a political-consulting business, reinforced the race premise.
"This is why what Sarah Palin was doing is so dangerous. I love, love, love attack politics ..., but she has - at least in the views of the Associated Press, they said her attack on this whole Bill Ayers thing was racially tinged," Mr. Carville said.
Ya. Dangerous. That Sarah Palin is downright scary! And racist! Or at least "tinged" with racism! Except for the part where Ayers is a white guy.

Yes Mr. Carville, and maybe that analysis of Sarah Palin is playing a part in why the AP is in danger of getting dropped by many newspapers.
I love how all of Obama's people keep making these ominous warnings and no one calls them on the racism of it. Because, yeah, I don't think they're saying a whole bunch of Caucasian liberals are going to be up in arms if Obama loses--do you?
It doesn't matter if Obama has a consistent five point national lead going into the election--it matters if he has a consistent five point lead in the right states. Maybe Mr. Carville et. al. need to be mailed a copy of the Constitution.
Posted by: James at October 14, 2008 12:33 PMI don't think the title of your post is the logical conclusion of the speech you've quoted. If a guy goes into an election with a 5 point lead, it's gonna be a big surprise if he loses. People may look for reasons why this will happen. Some (including zombie liars) will assert that there has been a fix made. Remember Al Gore?
Posted by: bryan at October 14, 2008 12:54 PMLet me just quote Dennis Miller on Carville:
James Carville, a snake oil salesman who actually looks like a snake. Is it just me or is this guy harder to watch than sausage being made? Huh? Carville's got more nervous tics than a Belfast parking valet.
This guy looks like a Muppet that was accidentally washed in hot. You know, I would be much more receptive to Carville if I ever got the sense that he possesses anything even remotely resembling the ability to reason. But there is never any discussion about anything, it's all just yanking the pull-starter on that ugly garlic knot of a head of his and watching him turn into a satanic Chihuahua under a strobe light.

Um, no actually, if someone goes in with a 5 point lead in a _national_ poll, they're still within striking distance.
The reason people swore the fix was in with Al Gore was because many people could not accept that an ignorant bumpkin from Texas had beat the Vice President of what was perceived as one of the most popular administrations in history. In reality, A. Gore didn't lose because he didn't carry Florida--he lost because he didn't carry his home state and B. Ralph Nader was fairly well known among the elderly as a stand up guy rather than the political idiot we see now which is why he got the percentage he did in Florida.
In Obama's case, I think the only reason he's up 5% in the polls at all is because he's running against John "I poke the base in the eye regularly" McCain and President Bush is doing his best to make sure no one believes there's _any_ difference between conservatism and socialism.
As a person who was halfway willing to vote for McCain up until the last couple of weeks (come on down Mr. Barr!), I can totally understand the gain in polls. However, I think it's hardly an "insurmountable" lead--and I for one think these statements are both racism themselves as well as a form of voter intimidation.
Posted by: James at October 14, 2008 01:28 PMDude, I don't understand why you insist on harping on this theme. If Obama loses you bet your ass race will be one of the reasons cited, if he wins because african american voters in Ohio, North and South Carolina come out to vote in insane numbers, race will be cited. Hi, welcome to political punditry. These people are paid to fill airtime with talking.
Posted by: Not Dawn Summers at October 14, 2008 01:37 PMSo, if he wins that'll prove racism in America is over, right? Right?
Posted by: Karol at October 14, 2008 01:41 PMyear, NDS, sited it will be - but by whom?
Posted by: Tatyana at October 14, 2008 01:51 PMSo, if he wins that'll prove racism in America is over, right? Right?
I'm sure there are those who will claim that, then again, change the channel and you'll hear something else. That's how it goes.
Posted by: not dawn summers at October 14, 2008 02:18 PMI think that Mccain was brain-washed while he was a pow and that he is slipping back into what they want him to be with the statement "my fellow prisioners" anyone else think that was strange????
Posted by: csmith at October 14, 2008 05:49 PMBlah blah blah, remember when Lieberman lost and the Holocaust came back?
This racism thing is such nonsense and Barack more than anyone has been using it since day one. I'd say it's his crutch but I'm sure that's racist. and I'm reluctant to diminish those who use an actual crutch.
By the way, did you hear what Jesse Jackson said about Barack and Israel today? The self hating but liberal loving Jews that vote for this fool are really in for an eye opening experience (a deserved one at that).
Posted by: ari at October 14, 2008 06:49 PMari, if you add one for every time Obama has mentioned his colour and take one away for every time McCain mentions he was a pow, you're looking at a serious minus number.
Posted by: bryan at October 14, 2008 07:47 PMYes but one did little but be born it and the other willfully endured it. Since when is being born something (and not having gone the Michael Jackson skin-bleaching)an achievement? It's not like he had the choice of opting out and didn't. Besides, look at the choices Barack has made and look at who he associates with - these are not proud, honorable men. These (Ayers, White, Jesse Jackson) are the very worst of society. A criminal, a racist hatemonger and a douchebag. What's so impressive? I'm completely missing it.
Posted by: ari at October 14, 2008 08:11 PMBryan, Obama doesn't have to mention race, because his surrogates are doing it every frickin' chance they get. If the race issue dooms Obama, it won't be because of his skin, it'll be because of the backlash against this transparent, ham-handed attempt to manipulate voters.
Posted by: Eric at October 15, 2008 12:41 AMI think I love Ari.

Obama is the biggest con artist masquerading as a politician that I have ever seen. (And I count the intermittent episodes where Al Sharpton putatively ran for office.) The one constant in his campaign is that if he lays down some lofty principle that his administration will follow, his campaign will immediately violate it and blame the stink on his opponent.
The best that we can hope for is that Obama wants to be President for purely narcissistic reasons, a la Bill Clinton. The worst that we might get is some nightmare combination of Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon.
