Liberals can't win when they're honest about their liberalism
My piece on Barack Obama's not-at-all liberal campaign is now up at Jewcy.

Stop saying that Obama ran on a conservative "tax cuts" platform. For the last month we've been told that his plan to raise taxes on the rich was socialism; now it is excessively conservative?
The socialism charge, in the context of the history of the progressive income tax, was an exaggeration - but at least had the virtue of not being totally ridiculous and unmoored from the facts.
Posted by: Charles at November 6, 2008 12:37 AMPerhaps when somebody says something to appear to the centre, that's dishonest? Oh dear. Can I hear the word 'maverick'?
I understand you're upset, and foreboding, but suck it up! Whining has never been an appealing aspect of any political affiliation.
If you want to go on a platform of "we're not as bad as them", you won't have any luck IMO. I'm thinking the 'aspiring to fulfil your hopes' platform played better because people were sick of the ' protect you from your/our fears' one.
Charles, he hammered home, again and again, how much his tax cuts would save almost every American. Yes, his tax hike on "the rich" is ridiculous, but he didn't run on that.
Bryan, I'm not upset. McCain sucked. If I'm whining about anything it's that we chose a sucky candidate as our own and I had to vote for that sucky candidate.
Something I didn't mention in the piece that is also applicable is despite Obama's comment about clinging to guns and religion, he was the candidate of faith in this election! The Democrat spoke of G-d and church more than the Republican! Again, that's not the liberal way of winning elections and you can both pretend you supported a liberal but he sure didn't run that way.
Posted by: Karol at November 6, 2008 10:06 AMCharles there is a difference of looking like a more conservative/center person and actually being one. Criticism of his policies still hold true, they are socialist, he just dressed them up to seem more conservative For example, Obama kept mentioning how his tax cut was going to be higher than Reagan's, an untruth but still shows him pandering to center right folks.
Posted by: Petitedov at November 6, 2008 11:19 AMExactly, Petitedov. And I do go on to say that no one believes he will actually govern this way but he said what he had to say to win.
Posted by: Karol at November 6, 2008 11:23 AM"The Democrat spoke of G-d and church more than the Republican!"
How is this new or a surprise? The left has always been a bit more upfront about such things. Bryan obviously spoke a lot more about it than any other political figure of his era. FDR spoke about faith a lot more than Landon, Wilkie, Dewey or even Hoover did. Carter spoke a lot more about it than Ford did. Clinton spoke a lot more about it than Bush patria or Dole did. W. is the exception and not the rule. The only Republican who could have gone toe to toe on wearing his faith on the outside this time out was Huckabee (had Romney done that, he would have turned off a lot more voters than he drew in).

oooohh, so Obama tricked the people into voting for him? That tricker!
Posted by: nds at November 6, 2008 12:12 PMNot tricker, liar.
Posted by: Karol at November 6, 2008 12:14 PMThe Democrat spoke of G-d and church more than the Republican!
Yeah, they always do that. Nobody believes it, though. Hell, their own base wouldn't vote for them if it was believable. You just know Bubba was sitting in church ignoring the service and mentally undressing the attractive women around him. Like, um, a friend of mine when he was a teen.
Posted by: Eric at November 6, 2008 12:15 PMOoh, you should start working on your Obama lied, people something slogan, then. "Cried" "Tried"? Eh, you've got four years.
Posted by: nds at November 6, 2008 12:46 PMWell, if Obama is telling the truth you'll be the one crying. And that's really all I need.
Posted by: Karol at November 6, 2008 12:52 PMHmmm, so truthfulness isn't part of a new kind of politics? Which part is new?
Posted by: Eric at November 6, 2008 01:26 PMA jew, a woman or a muslim are more likely to be voted into office before an atheist.
Posted by: bryan at November 6, 2008 01:58 PMIn what way was my post at all bitter? Which part was not completely factual?

Is this one of those "the American electorate are soooooooo dumb" threads? Deja Vu again.
C'mon K. Time for a song of the week thread. I nominate Stop Your Sobbing by The Kinks.
Bon Weekend.
Posted by: Urbane McMeercat at November 7, 2008 07:05 AMI really don't understand. Did all the liberals on this site have canned responses ready before the election and just aren't reading what I'm writing in order to deliver them? In what way am I sobbing AT ALL? And how/when did I call Americans dumb? I'm saying that Democrats can't run as liberals because liberals don't win. Americans are not at all dumb for taking Obama at his word, what else could they do--they barely know the guy! We'll see if he governs as he promised...if he doesn't my smart American brethren will kick his ass out.
Posted by: Karol at November 7, 2008 09:59 AMIt's called projection, Karol. They're assuming you're doing what they would have done if Zero had lost the election. Eh, except for the rioting.
