A low-life start

In a cab just now I heard our brilliant new president-elect say this:

"I have spoken to all the past presidents...the living ones."

Then, realizing that's a moronic thing to say he mentioned something about Nancy Reagan and seances and reading the writings on Lincoln. What? Out of racist grandmothers to toss under the bus?

Update: Allah's got video. And it's true, this is my first flash of anger about Obama. I was all shoulder shrugging for the last few days but dissing Ronald Reagan's wife is not something I can abide.

Ha - after the years of horrifice GWB press conferences, and his disjointed answers often not even answering the questions, this one was music to my ears...

Posted by: katie g at November 7, 2008 03:35 PM

He has an awful, awful long way to go before he so much as begins down the road to matching the moronic things I've heard from our current president since 2001. (Actually, since 1995, as I lived in Texas under Governor Bush.) When Obama starts talking about fish and man "coexisting peacefully," I'll consider him fair game in the intelligence department.

Out of racist grandmothers to toss under the bus?

Yes, just recently.

Posted by: It's Vintage, Duh at November 7, 2008 03:43 PM

Yeah, fine, Bush speaks horribly, but he's not a douchebag when he misspeaks like Obama was today. Dissing Nancy Reagan? Are you serious, dude? Why didn't he do that during the campaign? Whyyyyyyy.

Posted by: Karol at November 7, 2008 04:01 PM

He did lots of other things during the campaign, oh lots and lots - and it didn't change a a thing, and it wouldn't. Old black ladies would still fell to their reumatic khees, smug Dems will still pat themselves on the back for being soooo progressive, and idiots would still blather about bushchimphitler.

Relax and think about the wedding.

Wrong link, sorry. (although a very good post, too). Here's the correct one.

Posted by: Tatyana at November 7, 2008 04:14 PM

Dissing Nancy Reagan might've motivated more Republican voters.

Posted by: Karol at November 7, 2008 04:16 PM

Is there a such thing as Office of the President Elect?
&
I'd give my left foot to hear the press ask him once, "tell us PEO, where ya gonna get all this money your handing out?

Posted by: Buffoon at November 7, 2008 04:21 PM

Wait until Joe Biden gets to have his first news conference...gaffe-o-rama time!

Posted by: Will Stanton at November 7, 2008 04:30 PM

Yes. President Bush (as we all know) was not the great orator.

Nice deflection.

Can we refocus on President-elect Obama now? It's his turn to be under the spotlight. It's what he wanted. He's responsible for what he says or what he leaves out.

Posted by: Traffic Cop Timmy at November 7, 2008 04:56 PM

You've apparently set the offense-taking trigger on "hair."

Posted by: Charles at November 7, 2008 04:58 PM

Please, Charles. This is Ronald Reagan's wife we're talking about. Damn right I'll get offended by this jackass insulting her to deflect from his own stupidity.

Posted by: Karol at November 7, 2008 05:02 PM

What a way to start. That's terrible. The office sign is hilarious though. I'm waiting for the change posters on Penn. Ave.

Posted by: Bill M at November 7, 2008 05:05 PM

Speaking of not answering questions, "katie g," Obama can never come up with a single government program out of thousands that he would cut. We'll see if he goes through the budget line by line, as promised, and finds savings equal to the cost of his new programs.

Also, Rick Warren asked him to name three people he would ask for advice as president, and he came up with two: his "typical white person" grandmother (now deceased) and Michelle.

Posted by: KS at November 7, 2008 05:13 PM

Stay class, O - make fun of an old, sick former First Lady who adored her husband. I knew O. was a douchebag - he has proven it very, very quickly. Jackass.

Posted by: Alice L. at November 7, 2008 05:28 PM

I thought it was funny and not meant unkindly at all. I don't like the guy or his politics, but let's not get out undies in a bunch over nonsense. He clearly was joking and didn't have any malice behind it.

Posted by: Paul at November 7, 2008 05:38 PM

Tatyana is right. He's been making these kinds of gaffes all along, but the press either doesn't report them at all or they start the story with "After 100 hours without sleep, Obama made a slip of the tongue last night..."

The press will turn on him eventually, just like they turned on Carter.

Bush speaks horribly, but he's not a douchebag when he misspeaks

The name calling is great. So, Franken is a "moron" - and Obama is a "douchebag?" I refer you the whitehouse.gov for the transcripts of practically every press conference for the last 8 years...

Also, I didn't realize that Nancy Reagan had achieved sainthood and was beyond critique. She and her astrologer aren't worthy of poking fun? Who cares. The substance of Obama had to say was what matters, and he's light years beyond where W. was when he took office.

Posted by: katie g at November 7, 2008 06:39 PM

Please, Katie, I have one of the more polite political blogs on either political side. My name-calling and cursing is very limited--and very deserved in both cases here.

If Obama were a man about it and actually critiqued Nancy that'd be one thing. But, instead, he deflected from his own mistake by mocking her. Just not nice. I'm sorry you're so blinded by Obama adoration that you have a problem with my mockery but not our future president's. Sad.

Oh and on substance, he said zero. Tell me ONE THING we learned from this press conference. One.

As the AP points out:

It actually wasn't Nancy Reagan who was linked to conversations with the dead; it was Obama's top Democratic challenger for the presidency, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y.

How very diplomatic. He tried to slam a beloved Republican icon, but managed to hit a Democratic icon with a very active following. No wonder Biden says we're going to be tested.

Hillary reportedly had a seance to reach Eleanor Roosevelt.

I suppose that the times when Obama stroked his cheek with his middle finger while talking about Hillary or McCain didn't mean anything either.

Posted by: KS at November 7, 2008 06:52 PM

One news type caught on real quick. 'Hussein O is a great speaker of words, he can drone on forever but he never says anything'. Right up the left wings alley, empty words for empty heads.

Posted by: Scrapiron at November 7, 2008 07:36 PM

Has anyone pointed out yet that criticizing Obama for making fun of Nancy Reagan is racist?

Posted by: It's Vintage, Duh at November 7, 2008 08:14 PM

What a D-bag. I'm over this dude already. NEXT!

Posted by: rachel at November 7, 2008 10:53 PM

Let's not mention how professional he was scheduling the conference for 2:30 and not arriving till 2:50. You might say he gave the investing and general public the middle finger.

OT: K, are you reading your mail?

Posted by: Tatyana at November 8, 2008 03:29 PM

there's a youtube mashup of obama apologizing for being late to committee meetings and hearings and such.

I pray he and Biden keep gaffifying, it'll have an effect on his popularity.

Posted by: at November 8, 2008 08:23 PM

I can't believe what I heard. Attacking a former first lady who never bothered him. As for the "mutts" comments, I too find offense. Maybe he should call himself a friggin' zebra...
