What about this part from the press conference:

“It’s not going to be quick, and it’s not going to be easy to dig ourselves out of the hole that we’re in,” Mr. Obama said

That's now possible, too? DIG ourselves out of a hole?!

Posted by: Jay Season at November 8, 2008 09:19 AM

Jay, that's a pretty common expression.

Posted by: Eric at November 8, 2008 01:37 PM

I thought the common expression was the opposite: when you're in the hole, stop digging

The man's an imbecile. Getting that wrong, what a fool. I hope the people are aware of the old adage "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice....er, you can't fool me again" ;)

I wonder who will be honoured with presidential pardons in the next few weeks? I've always found this tradition fascinating.

Posted by: bryan at November 8, 2008 08:35 PM

It's not a tradition, Bryan. That was just Clinton taking bribes. I'll be surprised if Bush pardons anyone, with the possible exception of Libby and those two border patrol agents who got busted for shooting a drug runner in the ass.

Posted by: Eric at November 8, 2008 10:53 PM

Eric, bryan thinks it's a tradition because he's 16. Clinton and Bush are the only Presidents he ever knew.
That, and what Daily Mail says about them. So he can give us a lecture.

Posted by: Tatyana at November 8, 2008 11:28 PM

Tatyana, I'm 40. I wouldn't wipe my arse with the Daily Mail, which is one of the most Ill-informed right wing rags this country produces (a sort of Fox News made into paper - I have mentioned this in the past).
So I got it wrong, sorry! My bad! I have no problem with saying the 's' word.
Eric, thanks for that. I'm surprised it hasn't happened before. I think that guy from Alaska might be given an early release too (if he's even still in).
I wish I was 16 again though.

Posted by: bryan at November 9, 2008 05:52 AM

Some people are perpetually 16.
Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929): "Not to be a socialist at twenty is proof of want of heart; to be one at thirty is proof of want of head."

There could be tiny differences between British rags, indistinguishable from a long distance; substitute Guardian for Daily Mail if you wish. Gosh, the biggest amusement when I were in London recently, was how seriously the people there take their own opinions of everything - and how much energy and pomp they put into their irrelevant discussions.

Lecturing us seems to be a favorite pastime of old countries.

Not liking being called on your b.s. seems to be quite the thing with yourself. Observation, not lecture.

Posted by: bryan at November 9, 2008 02:37 PM

Bush pere started the ill-conceived pardon trend, Clinton expanded on it. I expect Bush fils to perfect it.

Posted by: Charles at November 9, 2008 03:09 PM

bryan, it is you who have been called on your BS. But then since you reveal your location, I found it useless to argue with somebody without the right to vote.

Once again - as you seem to need repetition to get the message:
you understand no difference between right and wrong. You equate deliberate lies and telling the truth. Therefore, you're mentally, should we say, undeveloped. You're a child in adult body.
All the "insults" against Obama you listed in the previous posts are just truthful statements, i.e. facts - him being a Marxist, a terrorist sympatizer (if not a co-conspirator), a redistributioner, a bad manager, a populist without substance, etc. That doesn't go away since he's elected, mind you - the person didn't change.
Whereas the rivers of desinformation that were flown against Republicans in general and Palin in particular are 75% false, and out of those 75% are shameful smears, for which nobody yet apologized.

Your "observations" have no value, bryan. Not worth for me to take you seriously anymore.

Posted by: Tatyana at November 9, 2008 03:36 PM

To clarify:
you can't act all 'get me the smelling salts' about the dem campaign when the rep one was just as, shall we say, robust.

"Robust republican campaign", as you call it, consisted of facts about Obama. Including his Arab Muslim parentage (his Kenyan father IS Muslim of Arabic origin). And his mother's socialist views - which he himself described as most influential in his life. And his association with known terrorists and radicals, etc etc.
Show me one accusation from Repub side that turned out to be not true.

Posted by: Tatyana at November 9, 2008 03:50 PM

Charles, GHWB did pardon Weinburger and a few others involved in Iran-Contra, but he didn't pardon people for campaign donations. Or bribes. Like I said, if W pardons anyone it will be Libby, who, IMO, deserves a pardon. Maybe the border patrol guys, but upon further reflection I doubt that, since Bush still seems to think (with no basis in fact) Hispanics will be Republicans if he's deferential enough.

I love smart Russian women. Tat, your summation of Brit behavior is on the money. Do we give a shit about which drooling idiot they want to house at #10? The Brits have become a race of supercilious assholes, who can't begin to find the way out of the muddle in which they've ensnared themselves. As if ANYBODY is interested in their advice.

Nancy did have some weird ideas (there's something about the White House that seems to do this; Nixon talking to the paintings and LBJ going down at night to stare at the picture of Woodrow Wilson, not to mention FDR's circle insisting that Lincoln's ghost wandered around) but yeah that was an uncalled for shot. Of course, back in the primaries, had Obama pointed out that Hillary used to speak to Eleanor Roosevelt, I'm sure all the Grand Old Partisans would be cheering him on.

Casca - thanx.
Brits are not an isolated special case, sadly. Half of Russian internet is filled with "well-wishers", who spout the most amusing theories about our politics, customs, even geography - and then proceed majestically with setting us straight.
Just today, some architect in Russia was explaining to me (I've been practicing contract office interior design for 16 years ), how to arrange furniture in reception room of a big firm: a couple of recliners for employers to take some rest during business hours and for visitors to watch "Company demo" videoclips while waiting to be summoned (in this exact expression) to the Principal's Office.

In neoneocon's threads appears a commenter from Canada whose tone I can't call other than regal. I'm afraid we (US) constanty disappoint His Majesty with our politics, economy, military, etc etc.

Sometimes it is amusing, sometimes - irritating. Mostly, I ignore the fools. Not productive.

Sorry for not posting sooner, I was in France honouring one of my fallen relatives (it has taken me 10 years to track down the guy (he shared his name with 160 something others!).
It is amazing that you quote Clemenceau; the architect of the 2nd world war with his insistence on 70 years of reparations from Germany, helping to Bankrupt them and bring the Nazis to power. Truly one of the old men who lost the peace at the expense of the young men who won the war.
Ponder this: all your 'facts' about Obama, are they ture because you didn't support the guy, and are "75% false" things about Palin false because you did support her? You seem to have a high level of being totally sure about what is truth and what is falsehood.
Casca, the other week, W praised Gordon Brown for his plan which is being adopted to pull the economies out of this hole they are in. Now, given that you think him a "drooling idiot", what does that make your guy if he thinks he's smart? I'm in straw man territory now: are you sorry you supported a man who thinks a drooling idiot is a smart cookie?
