Liberals are angry!
Obama has reversed pledges to immediately repeal tax cuts for the wealthy and take on Big Oil. He’s hedged his call for a quick drawdown in Iraq. And he’s stocking his White House with anything but stalwarts of the left. Now some are shedding a reluctance to puncture the liberal euphoria at being rid of President George W. Bush to say, in effect, that the new boss looks like the old boss.
...
OpenLeft blogger Chris Bowers went so far as to issue this plaintive plea: “Isn't there ever a point when we can get an actual Democratic administration?”
...
This isn’t the first liberal letdown over Obama, who promptly angered the left after winning the Democratic primary by announcing he backed a compromise that would allow warrantless wiretapping on U.S. soil to continue.
Here's the thing: I believe Obama is a liberal, I do. I believe in his heart he wants to redistribute wealth and give peace a chance. But a liberal can not win a presidential election in America. And Obama isn't stupid; he's already thinking of 2012. If he governs as a liberal, despite campaigning as a moderate, he'll lose after one term and go down in history as Carter with a darker complexion. I mean, even George W. Bush won two terms!
My biggest problem with Obama during the election wasn't that he was too liberal. It's that he's an empty suit, naive as all hell, and simply not ready to lead. Take this comment on why he isn't pulling out of Iraq pronto:
On Iraq, he says he’s just trying to make sure any U.S. pullout doesn’t ignite “any resurgence of terrorism in Iraq that could threaten our interests.”
Ohhhhhh. Really? Setting a date for a pull-out will electrify the resurgence as well as give them a hold out date? It's like he never thought about this before. I'm not saying he's stupid, he's clearly read a lot of books. But he's got no street smarts for a guy that supposedly slept on the street and washed his face with hydrant water alongside a homeless man (boooooooooolsheeeeeeeet). And that's me giving him the benefit of the doubt! He's either naive, or he straight out lied about pulling out of Iraq to win the election.
But hey, Americans wanted change and that's what we'll get. And then in 4 years we'll get to decide if we want more change. And hope. Let's not forget the hope.

People who rely on their street smarts spend their lives on the streets. They aren't movin' on up like George and Weezy.
Posted by: David at December 8, 2008 12:33 PMTotally not true. Some of the most successful people I know used their street smarts to get where they are.
Obama not knowing that the insurgency would be a concern if we pull out of Iraq. I mean, I hear George W. Bush is stupid, but even he's not THAT stupid.
Posted by: Karol at December 8, 2008 12:36 PMHe's a lawyer, liar, lawyer, liar, say that three times fast. What, you thought he was being honest? He doesn't know who HE is. Some ugly shit be comin'. Like that skinny little fuck Pete on MadMen, he wonders if he should get a dog, because it would look good to the clients.
Posted by: Casca at December 8, 2008 02:16 PMCASCA! Don't tell me, I only just finished the 1st season. So there will be a dog? No, no, don't say a word.
That reminds me - I have to post the draft about it.

Posted by: David at December 8, 2008 02:42 PMKarol must not have gotten the memo!
"The events of the past two weeks should be reassuring to anybody who feared that Obama would veer to the left or would suffer self-inflicted wounds because of his inexperience. He’s off to a start that nearly justifies the hype."
Thanks David Brooks!

"But conservatives should think twice before charging into battle against Obama under the banner of “small-government conservatism.”
Thanks Bill Kristol.

Thanks Bill Kristol even more for this nugget:
Writing in The Weekly Standard's blog, Michael Goldfarb wrote hopefully about Clinton "even present[ing] the case for war with Iran to an insubordinate United Nations in the event that Obama's personal diplomacy somehow fails to deter the mullahs from their present course." His editor, Bill Kristol, responded to the news with a giddy email: "I look forward to working with her!"
"Clinton would be a fine Secretary of State, and she is likely to be a nuisance to Obama whether she is inside or outside of his administration, but as our top diplomat she could reprise a role that made Powell a kingmaker in this year’s election. And perhaps she could even present the case for war with Iran to an insubordinate United Nations in the event that Obama's personal diplomacy somehow fails to deter the mullahs from their present course."
Thanks Weekly Standard!

"Obama finds himself in a much stronger position to lead than that enjoyed by his predecessor. He could use his wide popularity and his considerable influence over public opinion in America and across the globe to support democratic dissidents from all over the world. In doing so, he could unite Americans behind a policy that is based on the very democratic ideals that have always made America, as another senator from Illinois who became president so aptly put it, the last, best hope on Earth."
Hmmm...who could gush so lyrically about America and yet screw up our history (Abe was never a US Senator).
You guessed it. Sharanksy!

We know what rats do on a sinking ship. Sorry Republicans and conservatives. You've been conned-neoconned.
Posted by: Von Bek at December 8, 2008 03:27 PMIt's still a bit early to know what Obama is going to do. My take on his appointments is he just doesn't care that much about foreign policy and is willing to let it run on autopilot. What will really be telling is what happens legislatively in the first six months or so of his administration.
Posted by: Eric at December 8, 2008 04:21 PMIt's obvious that Obama has reached Phase 2 of his business plan.
Posted by: Mark Poling at December 8, 2008 10:14 PMHe's either naive, or he straight out lied about pulling out of Iraq to win the election.
Wrong.
He didn't have the security briefing that he just received as President-Elect when he was campaigning.
Beyond that, if you think that candidates do anything *but* lie to win an election, you're rather naive. I don't believe that's the case, Karol, but that's what it sounds like you're insinuating.
Posted by: Pokerwolf at December 8, 2008 10:22 PMPokerwolf, so...you think he lied too. So what am I wrong about?
And not all candidates lie, that's as much of a canard as "all men cheat".
Posted by: Karol at December 8, 2008 11:50 PMI was going to say what Pokerwolf said, but I'm glad he didn't. He was more succinct.
As the campaigner he expressed a position based on his values. As the P-elect, with his generals in counsel [generals who actually understand what went wrong with the Vietnam strategy], he weighed his values against the wisdom of his advisors, and changed his policy.
It would be interesting to see how your opinions of political operators change if you got out of the propaganda business and actually had some responsibility to govern.
