Puff

I've been on a bit of a David Sedaris kick lately and saw this linked at my buddy Shaniac's site. If you're a smoker, an ex-smoker or trying to be an ex-smoker, check out this David Sedaris piece.

Sedaris is an incredible writer, he has a gift to get to the heart of the matter while making you laugh, cry, and even cringe sometimes. I've been meaning to post a story of his for some time - a lot of them are at the New Yorker website for free. The end of this essay slaughters me.

My favorites are the essay where he's trying to extricate himself from a turd-filled bathroom at a family reunion, and the self-titled essay of "Me Talk Pretty One Day." I can't read that one without breaking into hysterical laughter.

I'm wack, but I haven't read homeboy before. [Pause to light a Newport. How appropriate -- I'm from the lower class and Black]. Clever, enjoyable. Good shit. I need to hurry up and finish with my smoking. Reach that 300,000 stoge limit...

I smoke American Spirit Menthol, because I grew up around Puerto Ricans but then was influenced by hippies.

Great, now who knows how long it will be before I'm able to eat a baked potato again.

"I smoke American Spirit Menthol..."

Give it up, Karol. Absolutely no good can come from it. I did 20 years and I'm glad I quit, but I've probably already relegated myself to a premature death.

For years I've been a casual smoker and I still maintain a 5-7 cigarettes a week habit, but not addiction. It's not the best, but it's not the worst.
