Change!

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich arrested for trying to sell Obama's soon-to-be-vacant US Senate seat. Blagojevich is a Democrat, something you'd have to guess from most of the articles on his arrest.

Hat-tip Tex in the City.

Wait a moment. Look at who the prosecutor is. Patrick Fitzgerald. Remember him? The guy who nailed Scooter Libby and George Ryan. The guy that Alberto Gonzalez wanted to can along with a lot of other US attorneys.

Pat Fitzgerald seems to be making a lot of enemies-corrupt Chicago Dems, corrupt Illinois GOPers and the Bush administration.

Pat Fitzgerald must be doing something right.

Trying to extort JJ Jr?

Posted by: Casca at December 9, 2008 10:51 AM

Now that he's won the election, will Obama stop acting like he doesn't know people who could put his reputation in jeopardy? Or will we hear that he only knows Blagojevich in passing, that state politics is complicated, and that it's just another coincidence that innocent-til-proven-guilty Tony Rezko raised funds for both of them?

I didn't have to guess... when I clicked on the link from the MSN homepage it was right there in the beginning. And just out of curiosity, after I read your post, I looked at my other main source of news, the NYT, and it was also there in the 2nd paragraph.

The only difference at this point between Democrats and Republicans is that the Dems just got caught. We haven't heard a peep about Bloomberg and Hillary's seat, but if you don't think some shenanigans are going on over there, you're crazy.

How much do you want to bet that Obama fires all federal attorneys in the Illinois jurisdiction as soon as he becomes President?

Not that there is anything wrong in firing attorneys.

Posted by: Jake at December 9, 2008 01:06 PM

Well, I think in this case the Legacy Media can be forgiven for assuming that "Corrupt Illinois Politician" means a Democrat...

"How much do you want to bet that Obama fires all federal attorneys in the Illinois jurisdiction as soon as he becomes President?"

Yeah Jake. Cause the President does not usually fire all political appointees and bring in his own people...hell Buchanan fired all of Pierce's people and they were both Democrats.

Posted by: Von Bek at December 9, 2008 02:39 PM

Hey Jake, I've got $100 that says he won't. Are you still offering that bet?

Posted by: Charles at December 9, 2008 03:02 PM

Wow, now it's getting interesting.

Posted by: Tatyana at December 9, 2008 05:08 PM

Wow, now it's getting interesting. Don't know if he would fire ALL attorneys, but Patrick F - definitely. if not - some unexpected overlooked details on the deal of his house/mortgage, f.ex - or who knows what else? might surface. The halo might look not so shiny then.

I'm willing to bet $100 on that, Charles.

Posted by: Tatyana at December 9, 2008 05:10 PM

I'm thinking, Tatyana. Name the date that Obama has to fire / request the resignation of Fitz by so I can think a little longer.

But are you sure that Obama is going to ask a guy his staff is reportedly working with to resign?

Posted by: Charles at December 9, 2008 06:16 PM

The Feds were closing in on Hilary for being part of a land flipping scheme in 1992. Clinton made President just in time. He fired all US attorneys (96) not just the ones for Arkansas. If he had not done so Hilary would have been sent to jail.

Obama comes from just a corrupt political machine that Clinton did, so I expect Obama will protect his buddies by making sure no US attorney will be left standing in Illinois.

Von Bek: Bush fired 6 attorneys for incompetence in his 8 years as President.

Posted by: Jake at December 9, 2008 06:18 PM

Apples and oranges Jake. A US attorney is appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate for 4 year terms. They are-oh the horror-political appointees. Bush used the power of the patronage and so will Obama. It's a long standing tradition in American history or as the good Jacksonian William Marcy (one of our more underrated Secretaries of War and State and a pretty good governor of NY) said "to the victors go the spoils."

I am quite aware of the issue of the Bush administration's demanding the scalps of US Attorneys (I mean there were even whispers that Pat Fitzgerald would be one of them). Strangely the scalps that were gathered were Alberto el Malo and that wonderful and oh so logical choice for the Supreme Court of the United States Harriet M! It was nice to see partisan bootlickers get what they deserve.

Oh, no no, Charles. The original conditions had no date stamp on the deed. Oh'Bummer will wait for the noise to subside, and then we'll never hear about patrick Fitzgerald again. I can give you one end post of the time frame, though - it'll happen some time after Jan. 20th.

Put my $100 on escrow, pls - on that day.

Of course he is "working with them" - that's the name of the dance. The show's getting more and more entertaining, ppl.

Posted by: Tatyana at December 10, 2008 01:11 PM

No end date? Pass. There is too much USAtty turnover over the course of a term to separate the signal from the noise.

Posted by: Charles at December 10, 2008 11:48 PM

I knew it's all bluff, Charles. Are you a lawyer? To get off on technicality as soon as getting gets tough and you're taken at your word- how typical.

Posted by: Tatyana at December 11, 2008 12:18 PM

It isn't a bluff. Your offer is bullshit. I have to wait eight years for my $100?

In 8 years Karol will be pregnant with her third kid and no longer blogging.

Posted by: Charles at December 11, 2008 01:27 PM

In 8 years you might be eternally grateful for a perspective of a tax-free hundred, what with O'Bummer in the House and the country turned into a SU-lite. Not that you're getting it, of course.

I take it as admittal that you lost, already.

HEY. I'll still be blogging.

Posted by: Karol at December 11, 2008 02:22 PM

Take it however you like Tatyana. You can even make up a certificate for yourself that says "I Won Teh Internets!!!1!!"

The bet you offered remains bullshit.

You won't be blogging in 8 years, Karol. Nobody will. I don't think this World Wide Web thing has legs.
