I love me some Terrell Owens

Something like 18 people have send me the "Dallas Cowboys will release T.O." article. Thank you for being so concerned about America's Team, we really appreciate it. But if you read the article, it says:

"I think we all know that chemistry is the problem with this team more than the schemes or anything else," a Cowboys source told the website. "The big one [Owens] didn't get discussed yet, but I'm sure it will and real hard."

So, an unnamed source says that there have been no Owens discussions but that he's sure there will be. And that's a news story?

Maybe Owens will get released, I guess I don't know enough about football and there must be like 80 wide receivers who are "ninth all-time in receptions, 10th in yardage (13,070) and third in touchdown catches, and tied for fifth all-time with 131 total touchdowns." willing to step in. But this unsourced, no detail article is just poor, sensationalist reporting. The writer should be ashamed, the new source should be embarrassed and the people who forwarded it to me should really keep an eye on their own teams. I don't even know your teams!

The one thing you said that made the most sense was....

"I guess I don't know enough about football"

Larry, you're right, unlike you I don't sit alone in my basement watching non-stop football and I'm actually able to watch football with other people because, well, it's fun. So, no, I'm not trying to compete for #1 fan, that role is all yours. I'm sure the chicks are superhot for it.

Let's be clear...I only need to sit by myself when the Skins play...I can watch the Cowboys lose to any other team with a group of people and thoroughly enjoy it :)

If I recall correctly, before you picked the Cowboys out of a hat, you didn't know any teams.

If I recall correctly, before you picked the Cowboys out of a hat, you didn't know any teams.

A) Totally not true. I knew the Texans because I loved David Carr. I knew the Cowboys, Jets, Giants, Redskins and Ravens because I had big fan friends of each team. I knew Buffalo because they are the only team that plays in NY. And,

B) I didn't choose them out of a hat. People choose their teams for all sorts of wacky reasons--hey Larry, why don't you tell us how a life-long New Yorker becomes a Skins fan--mine was because someone gave me the Cowboys shirt. Good story as any.

Football teams are the one thing where I am totally reactionary and irrational. I left Ohio as soon as I graduated from college; I left the Catholic church a few years before that. (The 12 years of Catholic school did no good.) I change political parties on a whim (although I'm always a libertarian philosophically, regardless of what my voter enrollment says).

But I was born into a caste of Browns fans, and "choosing" another team, as if I had any say in the matter, is unthinkable. Even though they've sucked for all but a few of my 43 years. Even though the antichrist Art Modell moved the original Browns to Baltimore, and replacement Browns were foisted upon us. I should have quit them then, but I'm incapable of it.

Yeah, my father thinks sports are stupid and my brother is a lukewarm Jets fan. I was wide open to choose whatever I wanted.

Speaking as a Giants fan, I would love to have T.O. as New York's #1 receiver, so long as it's only a one or two-year contract.

Nooooooooooooo. Anywhere but NJ.

If you must know, the first game I ever saw was the superbowl in 82-83 between the Skins/Dolphins...I was 7 years old...I liked the Skins helmets and uniforms and rooted for them...the rest is history.

Karol, who knew you were the man of the family?

Frankly, pro teams are a lot like women. I can enjoy the company of any of them, just as long as I'm free to move on to another, and I grew up as a Browns fan too.

Now college football, that's another story. For those of you who eeeked out your BA somewhere outside of the BCS... that's a bleak way to start life. For those of us who are perennially in the hunt for a shot at the national championship, every Fall is a three month sex act. Some better than others, but all good.

And I got a t-shirt from a guy that ended up becoming my fiance. I like my story better.

There's a big difference in stories of someone 7 yrs old and someone over 30.

your story is lame...mine is authentic

Posted by: Larry at January 16, 2009 12:41 AM

Enh, the fact that the guy who obviously really, really loved you finally got your clue light to come on doesn't necessarily make for a better story--it just means you're really lucky and he's really persistent.

As to your T.O. fixation, you forgot a couple of stats--leads the league in drops over the last six years and is the unofficial leader for "most locker rooms blown up." More importantly, I'll borrow Bill Simmons' "Ewing Theory"--San Fran dumped him and was better the next year. Philly dumped him and, since then, has actually won a couple of playoff games and stands one win away from the Super Bowl.

Dallas on the other hand...well, I guess Jerry Jones is happy being a consistently one and done contender as long as he has an over the hill receiver who treats locker rooms like Gojira treats Tokyo. Sure, we'd all like to focus on our own teams, but when you keep hearing the roaring, seeing the flames, and seeing Wade Phillips portraying the role of a bad lip-synced, clueless Japanese Self-Defense Force Commander ("The receiver is not a distraction! Our chemistry is fine! Now pardon me while I go hose radioactive goo off of my team!")...well, it's just kind of hard to avoid watching.

Who knew that when T.O. said "get your popcorn ready" he meant "Watch as the Great and Powerful Terrell attempts to emasculate another QB and coach..."? Oh, just any of us basement dwelling football fans who had seen the show the last two stops. Worst thing that ever happened to him is that he got out of going to Baltimore. Why? Because Ray Lewis and that defense would've put him in his locker room place--and he'd probably be enjoying a renaissance year right now with Flacco throwing to him.

Posted by: James at January 16, 2009 07:45 AM

James, you're talking Stengelese, "addition by subtraction". If I may add another, "Finding good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story."

Posted by: Casca at January 16, 2009 11:15 AM

Larry, much as I would've loved to have spent my teen years completely obsessed with sports instead of the opposite sex, I'm happier my way, thanks.

And James, I assure you IC didn't always love me, we were buddies, I'd set him up with my girlfriends.

T.O. just gets a bad rap because he's got an ego (which, I love). He isn't a troublemaker, he doesn't get into fights or have altercations at strip clubs. He's never shot himself in the leg. He just wants to play football and play it well. Why all the hatin'???

Posted by: Karol at January 16, 2009 12:59 PM

Yada yada yada....shto ti panemayish, blyat? :)

Posted by: Larry at January 16, 2009 02:37 PM

Of course, you'd rather have Housh or Anquan Boldin-maybe even Antonio Bryant-but once you get past those guys, is there really a better option than signing Terrell Owens for a season?

He has a tremendous work ethic, is still a top-flight receiver-even if he's not anywhere near as good as he was at 30-and would automatically be the best wideout on the team if he came to The Giants.

The same people who are saying he's washed-up said Randy Moss's career was done before he was traded to New England.
