Barack Derangement Syndrome (like Bush Derangement Syndrome, but different)
Barack Obama has been such a phenomenal president that he should definitely get a third term.

Hey, you forgot that amazing 80% approval rating!

And as for a 3rd term for Obama? Yikes.

And a 3rd term for Obama? Maybe I'm just a Slow Susie, but I think we should let him get one day of executive experience under his belt before we start making him our Dear Leader for life...
Posted by: jana at January 15, 2009 06:16 PMNow that's just silly. Based on precedent, even if such an amendment was passed, it starts with the president who is next in office, not the current one. For example when the Congress and the states decided to limit the president to two terms, Harry Truman, who was in office then, was made exempt from it. Strangely enough the one president of recent times who was vocal about tossing out presidential term limits was Gerald Ford. I could not even imagine such an amendment passing Congress. I suppose a number of Senate Republicans, now that Bush is gone, will recognize the perils that come with a too powerful president. You'll also have the likes of Robert Byrd fighting it. Whatever you think of Byrd, I think it is more than fair to say he is a constant foe of executive usurpation; a supporter of big government while a foe of a strong president. It's not unheard of in American history. It was pretty much the mantra of the border state Whigs (I'm starting to think Byrd may have been in the Senate too long that he must have been in the caucus with John Bell, Henry Clay, William Rives, John Crittenden etc).
Posted by: Von Bek at January 16, 2009 09:02 AMThe problem is you can't go around legislating programs and freebies to get votes without a strong president to to carry them out.
