Whoa

A plane has crashed into the Hudson River and I just found out about it on Twitter. And here is an absolutely insane photograph. A must-click.

UPDATE: Another crazy photo.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Allah's got rescue video.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Michelle Malkin just twittered that it looks like everyone on the plane survived! Amazing! Here's hoping that's true.

Let's keep the passengers and crew in our thoughts and prayers.

Yes, I'm hopeful they will all be rescued.

Posted by: Karol at January 15, 2009 04:16 PM

That first picture is really bizarre. It looks like they're standing in ankle-deep water. (I mean, they are standing in ankle-deep water, but on the wing, not near shore.)

That is an amazing, picture, Karol. Thank God it came out so well and kudos to the pilot.

Very strange way for US Air to introduce their new ferry service.

Damn, that's good training. Good thing the chick wasn't driving.

I was just having a quiet tea with a friend in Keko coffee shop, when suddenly the news came on TV, live, of the rescue operation going on on the Hudson, right across from Javitz Center. Turn in NY1 news, if you can; I believe they have a streaming video on their site.
In this weather! Picked up from the frigid water!

According to Bloomberg, who flies helicopters, the pilot did an amazing job of landing the plane. He walked the plane twice to make sure everyone was off the plane.

In this kind of emergency, doing a power-off landing in the water is better than trying to head for an airport, because you have more of a chance to adjust for mistakes if it's not perfectly set up.

Everyone does seem to be safe. Amazing

I thought Russians did this sort of thing every Tuesday? He's probably a former military pilot, and making sure everyone was clear was just part of the gig.

In this weather! Picked up from the frigid water!

I keep remembering that plane crash in the Potomac. I think it was this same time of year, but it was frozen. The pilot was not just brave, level-headed, and talented, but lucky as well.

Posted by: Tanya at January 15, 2009 07:50 PM

...talking about real heroes (a vestige from another thread) - see, Von Bek? This pilot is a prime example.

Posted by: Tatyana at January 15, 2009 08:02 PM

Tanya, I was in DC when it hit the 14th St bridge. Like they say, it's not the fall that kills you, but the sudden stop at the end. The Potomac was frozen over, and it was in a blinding snowstorm. Worse yet, the crash was caused by improper deicing.

Ex-military, 1000's of logged hours, works in the air safety field. Talk about a happy convergence or even serendipity. Medals for breakfast.

The Potomac was frozen over, and it was in a blinding snowstorm. Worse yet, the crash was caused by improper deicing.

And he hit a bridge too, didn't he? That couldn't have helped.

Didn't the pilot make some snarky remark about the de-icing not being important, before they took off? That might have been another crash...

Posted by: Tanya at January 16, 2009 10:22 AM

And ... he's a glider pilot in his spare time.

Posted by: David at January 16, 2009 10:31 AM

They had deiced, but the takeoff wait was so long that the wings iced up again. They should have called for deiceing again, but they didn't. And yes, they hit the 14th St bridge.

this supposed crash in New York is not considered terrorism at this point, but some are saying one goose did yell before being sucked into an engine, “Heil Bushitler! Long live the neocon Savior! God is good!”.

Convenient, right before the presser when he has to explain to the country why he ruined it all for Halliburton stock.

Everyone has survived and the pilot was the last to get off after walking up and down the plane to make sure everyone was off before him. Had the Palins or the Bushes been on board this plane you can bet your sweet bippy they would have been knocking people out to save themselves and most likely their first victim would have been the pilot! St Sarah would steal all the Neiman Marcus off the drowning (brown) people on the way out! Spit! Spit! Spit! Spit!

BARACK DESERVES THIS GREAT CORONATION BECAUSE HES SAVING US FROM THE NEOCON NAZI FORTH REICH!

Here's the exchange, from the black box. I remembered it being snarkier than this, but I was awfully young at the time. My sense of snark clearly hadn't evolved yet.

First-officer: "It's a losing battle trying to de-ice these things. It gives you a false feeling of security, that's all it does."

Captain: "Well, it satisfies the Feds."
