Good luck, Mr. President

I love America more than I love any party or political philosophy. So if Obama balances the budget, ends all wars, brings hope and confidence to the American people all while lowering the oceans and projecting strength abroad, I'm in.

But if he doesn't, let's all remember what we learned during the last eight years: dissent is patriotic. Let's be patriots!

Obama has brought bad weather to America. He is off to a really bad start.

So far, the stock market is not impressed.

By all means, dissent.

And do so without fear of accusations that you are, somehow, less American for doing so.

This country was founded amid contentious debate, and I hope we never stop disagreeing.

Like Ceasar, he need not fear his enemies, but his friends.

I guess you missed all the un-American comments about people who dared oppose gay marriage in California. Or, does it not count when someone as prominent as Tom Hanks says it?

"So if Obama balances the budget, ends all wars.."

A: 'Not bloody likely', and 'not bloody likely'.

I didn't miss it, and it's loathesome that Hanks pulled that crap (short version: I am in favor of gay marriage).

Committing high treason, electoral fraud, violations of the Constitution -- those are un-American.

Thinking that marriage should be narrowly defined as one unmarried adult man and one unmarried, unrelated adult woman is not un-American at all.

I personally think it's wrong, but -- unless your motivation is "By banning gay marriage, we will destroy America hahahahaha!" -- it has absolutely nothing to do with one's patriotism.

And yes, saying "you have to think what I think or you're a traitor to your country" is decidedly un-American.

Posted by: Joe Grossberg at January 20, 2009 01:07 PM

But you just said that Americans no longer had to fear being accused of being un-American for their opinions. And, well, that's just not so.

Posted by: Karol at January 20, 2009 02:14 PM

Ah..the liberal creed. Do as I say, not as I do.

Posted by: StB at January 20, 2009 03:13 PM

Lowering the oceans....LOL...good one.

Posted by: Dan at January 20, 2009 03:18 PM

And if(when) he doesn't, how do you think you'll learn it? From where? The media will roll their eyes in fanatical worship no matter what. Poor deluded, from all walks of life and by all kinds of reasons, will be nodding in agreement and singing along.

Why wait for never-happening admission? Let's start (ir, rather, let's not stop) dissenting now.

Karol, haven't you heard? Now is the time to pull together as a nation. To heal the wounds of... well, whatever wounds they are.

I think we conservatives should give Obama all the respect the Democrats gave Bush over the last eight years. I hope we're a bit classier, but that's a pretty low bar.

As this post was time stamped at 10:41 am EST, saying "Good Luck, Mr. President" refers to Bush. Where's the Good luck for President Obama? It is, after all, President Obama Day.

President. Obama.

"But you just said that Americans no longer had to fear being accused of being un-American for their opinions."

Poorly phrased -- "shouldn't fear" as in "shouldn't let fear deter you", not "don't expect".

There are two things that have been brought to my mind today:

1. The media was ripping the Clintons apart the last three years of his time in office (if they didn't start dinging them earlier).

2. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.

They're selling Obama keychains in 7-11. When he falls, he's going to fall hard and fast.

Yes, those gunboats have a look of clay about them.

Posted by: Casca at January 21, 2009 10:16 AM

While I'm with Eric that we conservatives should take Obama to task, I wish we conservatives had taken Bush to task instead of cheerleading. National Review refused to back Ike in 1956. Could you imagine that today? No. It was always the Grand Old Pravda, conservative principles be damned. And so a president goes back to Texas with a war that appears not to be won and a big bloated federal government. January 2009 or January 1969? W or LBJ? Ain't much of a difference in the general scheme of things. And a lot of "conservatives" should be held accountable. Based on 2006 and 2008, I think a lot of Republicans from "the next president of the US" George Allen to Mrs. Robert J. Dole (R-KS....uh...NC....uh hell let's just be honest, R-District of Columbia) have already been held accountable.

I read one critic of W stating that he has given up the Crawford ranch (because he only had it to pretend he wasn't a privileged east coast trust fund brat). What says anyone else?
