Bloom off the rose, bubble burst, etc.

Obama stimulus parties not so festive. Mary Katharine Ham reports:

The reaction, among even Obama's grassroots in one of the bluest areas of the country, reflects a surprisingly deep skepticism of the popular president's first major legislative push, and the extent to which the Obama administration has lost the message war over the stimulus.

"Isn't there a lot of pork in this bill?" asked Rahilla, the 20-something Chicago native echoing Republican criticism of the bill, which Republican leaders point out is stuffed with pet projects and long-term spending not meant for stimulus. It's the supremacy of that message that has sent support for the stimulus package tumbling by 8-14 points in a month, according to polls.

In a sun-drenched high-rise apartment in southwest Washington, D.C., Rahilla and 14 others gathered Saturday for food, drink, and activism. They were reluctant to place much blame for problems with the current bill on Obama, preferring to pick on the less-popular Congress.

"Many senators, when they go in to vote on a bill, they don't know what they're voting on. They know a piece of it, but they don't know all the underlying things they put in there," said A.J., a 75-year-old African-American real estate agent from the District. "They haven't read the thing."

Sadly the populace seems to be with Obama on this one.

Isn't it Bush's fault until at least Sept 12th?

Posted by: bryan at February 9, 2009 01:40 PM

Yes, Bush stuck the provisions for groups like Acorn in Obama's shamtastic stimulus bill.

I get the reference, 9/11 wasn't Bush's fault because he wasn't president for the SEVEN years in which Al Qaeda planned the attack. This isn't quite the same.

I really don't understand what's going on right now. The Democrats have all the votes they need to pass this thing, why don't they just pass it without drawing on the "grassroots support" well? There were a lot of people who enthusiastically donated time and money to get Obama elected, but if they get the idea he's gonna "mobilize" them every few weeks they'll drop out.

"It would be irresponsible in the extreme for an individual to forestall a personal recession by taking out newer, bigger loans when the old loans can't be repaid. However, this is precisely what we are planning on a national level. When the government spends, the money has to come from somewhere. If the government doesn't have a surplus, then it must come from taxes. If taxes don't go up, then it must come from increased borrowing. If lenders won't lend, then it must come from the printing press, which is where all these bailouts are headed."

Eric, it's all smoke and mirrors. Obama is trying to generate "camera ready" storylines for the media to pick up and try to pass off as strong grass roots support for the sh*t sandwich he's dead set on forcing down the electorate's throat.

This media manipulation is supposed to scare/impress some folks who's names resemble Snow and Specter and such. (And of course whip the Blue Dogs back in line.)

What you're really seeing is a pony without many tricks run through the routine again. Expect to see the repertoire flogged more often, not less, as it proves less and less effective.

Let me be the first to propose an Obama suicide watch. When it all caves in on him I really worry about how he'll handle it.

So is it Bush's fault that over seven years have passed and the US, the mightiest power in the world, has failed to capture or kill the mastermind who planned it?

Posted by: Von Bek at February 9, 2009 05:21 PM

I noticed last week that Obama said he'd screwed up. I can't think of any occasion where this phrase had been used by Cheney or W. Help with this please?
Surely this monetary strategy began in October?
I also noticed that Obama had a town hall meeting the other day and didn't hand pick his people/ throw out detractors.

Posted by: bryan at February 9, 2009 05:39 PM

bryan, my confidence level that the town hall meeting wasn't heavily stage managed is very low. (Gaming that sort of thing is what I consider Obama's real genius. We'll see how much that matters in the long run.)

"I noticed last week that Obama said he'd screwed up."

Later this week Mr. Obama is going to redefine "screw up" when he signs our +trillion dollar bail out into law.

Time to get out of the dollar while it's still worth something, folks. The game is up.

I remember reading about a scam Salvador Dali used to pull. He's take his friends to a restaurant and they'd all eat. He'd then write out a cheque. On the back of the cheque he'd do a little sketch. The restaurant owner wouldn't cash the cheque because he had an original Dali. Dali kept no money in that bank account.
Venezuela asked to be paid for it's oil in Euros a few years back, breaking with the 1974 OPEC deal which had the dollar as the standard oil currency. After this, Iran did the same thing. So now (and especially since the Euro is a stronger currency since then) there exists a situation in which the USA is a bit like Dali. Those dollars are coming back, and this is a factor which will also affect the USA economy.

Posted by: bryan at February 10, 2009 11:50 AM

bryan, before you worry about the dollar, you'd better worry about your own currency. What's, uh, what's the exchange rate these days? Not to say the U.S. isn't having big problems, but your national government and central bank are doing worse.

And you foolishly ascribe any sincerity to Obama's words. He admitted his mistakes...and gave himself not even a slap on the wrist. Forgive him and forget is what he wants, and his worshippers are all too ready to forget his faults and blunders.

Von Bek, how much do you want to spend to catch a neutralized enemy who could well be dead already? A million dollars? Fifty billion?

Schiff should have gone further. It isn't just "If lenders won't lend" -- it's now a matter of lenders cannot lend. There just aren't enough loanable funds to fund this "stimulus." So the Treasury will turn to the Fed, as it's done before except never at this level. It'll be bad: the depression of the 1930s combined with the inflation of the 1970s. Remember that one characteristic of economic downturns is falling prices (poorly called "deflation") because of reduced aggregate demand.

"Von Bek, how much do you want to spend to catch a neutralized enemy who could well be dead already? A million dollars? Fifty billion?"

Well how much have we spent already? And if he is neutralized, I take it we'll be sending the troops home since terrorism is no longer a problem....as we can tell in Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Palestine....

Posted by: Von Bek at February 10, 2009 01:48 PM

Perry, How are you?
As to my ascribing sincerity to Obama: he's a politician, so that cannot be. I did say it made a change from the previous guys who actually seemed to have little they regretted, even though they did make some mistakes (like everyone). I think one is doing well in politics if you make 51% good decisions, but W and Cheney would put themselves a little higher than that, No?
