Mitt 2012! (by Petitedov)

I'm a Romney girl all the way (I hail from Taxsachusetts), so it's nice to see Romney's name in the news, saying things I (mostly) agree with.

"I also think it's important for us to nod to the president when he's right," Romney said, after chiding the president's budget. "He will not always be wrong, and he's done some things I agree with."

Romney, who spoke at a dinner for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said he's pleased with the president's plans to "finish the job" in Iraq and Afghanistan -- lines that drew applause from the partisan audience. He also applauded the president for standing up to the auto industry.

"I hope he continues to be tough and shows some backbone because that industry is not going to make it unless we have real backbone and get those guys to fundamentally restructure all of their obligations," he said.

I think he makes perfect sense, Limbaugh can say all he wants about his desire for Obama to fail, but serious politicians can't allow themselves that kind rhetoric. So Romney's remarks seem like a good balance, although I wish, like Allah, he would have at least alluded to Obama's meddling in GM as a bad thing. I typically agree with the official Alarming News line, that a candidate shouldn't try to be all things to all people (like McCain tried). I think conservatives can and will win on their conservative principles. However, I think this slight pandering to independents works in Romney's favor, although I hope it lessens as 2012 election gets closer and closer. Time will tell Go team Romney!

This is a good thing. Statesmen are statesmen because they have dignity. Blowing raspberries at your opponent makes a guy look bad compared to structured criticism ("This is good, but I don't want to do that other thing" sort of thing). Let's face it too, if you say the other guy's dead wrong on everything, replace them and carry on with the things they did, you look bad again. Why make a poisoned chalice for yourself?

I think everyone missed the larger point of Rush's comments, which is if Obama succeeds in much of what he tries we won't have a recognizable Republic left.

That being said, Romney can't throw those rocks because he actually has to, you know, _get elected_. I'll freely admit I'm indifferent to Romney, and I don't think the GOP can win with him as their candidate. Like Steve DeBerg, Romney's only going to be good enough to get the Republicans beat in 2012.

James - I know what Rush was trying to say, and I do agree with him, because my family didn't come from Russia to live under socialism again.
I think Romney needs to loosen up a little, his approach is still very wooden. I've seen him as an executive and he was good at it, he knew how get his agenda across, how to lead...I think he is a very smart guy and I really wish for someone like him to be the executive the US, not Mr. Socialism.

Posted by: Petitedov at April 3, 2009 08:50 AM

Well said James. Notwithstanding that the Mormon thing is a political non-starter, I don't like him. He belives in taxation. We need someone who hates taxation as much as those of us who are subject to it.

Mitt Romney?...seriously?

Mitt needs to save his kids trust fund money and stay in the private sector...he has no chance.

Posted by: Larry at April 3, 2009 10:34 AM

Larry why does it scare you so much that Romney's is rich? I really don't get that, he is an excellent executive and frankly I like people who did well in private sector to do the same in the public.
C - Maybe I'm naive about the whole Mormon thing, but he got elected in Massachusetts...I hope it's a not a non-starter.

Posted by: Petitedov at April 3, 2009 11:54 AM

I don't care whether Romney is rich...I don't like that he used money to buy votes, endorsements and to distort the record of Huckabee.

I could care less about that he's mormon...unless someone is a theocrat, I could care less what anyone's religous beliefs are....I don't care whether they believe in evolution, etc...

you keep mentioning that Mitt got elected in Mass.
Huckabee got elected in Arkansas; which had a higher democrat/republican ratio in state government then any other state, including Massachusetts.

Mitt is a phony...he doesn't connect with voters...he is the republican john kerry

Posted by: Larry at April 3, 2009 12:20 PM

Huckabee is as genuine as that other great communicator out of Arkansas - Bill Clinton.

Posted by: Petitedov at April 3, 2009 01:11 PM

I hate seeing people mis-state what Rush Limbaugh said..I'm not a huge fan of his..but right is right..and it's important to be accurate..rather than continue to follow the mainstream media in twisting his words or misrepresenting them.

What Rush said was...that IF Obama tries to turn the country into a socialist country..then he hopes he fails at doing so...which MANY Americans agree with...

That's a big difference from saying "I hope he fails "...which is being touted by far too many people in blogland and otherwise

Posted by: Tamara at April 3, 2009 02:41 PM

Petitedov,

What's your proof on the Huckster being disingenuous?

by the way....no politician is perfect...they're all full of BS to a certain extent.

Posted by: Larry at April 3, 2009 03:49 PM

I think Romney had his shot. I don't mind Romney being rich though I do mind the way he rose to power-because daddy ran for president, was governor and was a Cabinet secretary. Not that he is any different than Hillary Clinton, the Bushes, Mrs. Dole, young Chafee, young Sununu, all the Kennedys on this regard.

I can't say I blame Romney for bashing Huck. He had to. They were fighting for the same voters and first impressions matter. Hi, I've always been a social conservative and I'm a devout Christian from Arkansas. Hi, I think Jesus lived with the Indians and I supported abortion, sodomite marriage and socialized health care in the past but now I'm against them and I am from Michigan, no wait Utah, no wait Massachusetts.
Well who do you think a farmer who goes to the ole church every Sunday in West Branch, Iowa is going to vote for?

Romney is going to find the field a lot more crowded in 2012 with Huck coming back, the newly converted Newt, Palin, Sanford, and Piyush Jindal all fishing for the same votes.

I actually welcome Romney's position as it is a position that puts the responsibility of what's going on with the country squarely on Obama which is where it should be. But the other part of the whole equation for conservatives should be to drive a wedge between Obama and those who believe what he believes -- the left of center crowd. Obama is a leftist and he's beginning to realize that the soul of America is center right and in spite of what he says it continues to pull him in that direction. The center left are those who believe that we're getting out of Iraq, closing Gitmo, reversing don't ask don't tell, unions, the car industry, and etc...Obama made promises to these people that are very serious to them and sooner or later they'll want him to pay up. So far he can say he is but the reality in a lot of these scenarios are beginning to play out that he can't. He's saying what they want to hear but having to eventually back off and many times reverse what he says. WE NEED TO DRIVE THAT WEDGE WITH LIBS AND OBAMA's FOLLOWERS.

Obama is trying really hard to have it a lot of ways right now and he can--for now. He's been in office less than four months. The conservatives believe what they believe and are principled there, we just need to stay where we are and either take the "Rush" tact which I believe is great to express our views in a way that alarms the people but at this point most of what we say. preaches only to the choir and doesn't give us any headway. The other negative for us is that Obama is protected by the MSM.

We need to really play up Obama's shifts in stances that we agree with. We need to forcefully point out how great it is that he's backed off from what he said in the the elections and hasn't gotten us out of Iraq yet in a way that is dangerous and it looks like we're going to be there still for a long time. He says what he says but it's his actions that we need to point to as WONDERFUL where we agree with them...we also need to point out that he's backed down from "don't ask, don't tell" and tell the libs that we're happy that he's backed off from that for now. He's now coming around to the auto industry and the need to reform which we need to point out is great although we wasted billions of dollars in the first place.

There are so many other things that he says which contradict who we know he is and we need to drill that over and over again to our center/lib friends. We need to help them realized that they were sold a bunch of crap and nothing much is going to change in spite of what their "hero" said. He has done a lot of damage but we have principles too that can be used to blunt the left.

We need to follow this template that's been set by Romney, drive a wedge deep into the center/left and by the time 2010 comes along we'll be in a great position.
